Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio for the weekend news. We will be live for YouTube subscribers as you can post questions during the show.
The announcement of Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Great Muta at the 1/1 show at Tokyo’s Budokan Hall marks a change as WWE has largely not allowed its talents to work off schedule for years. Some of this may be an example of how big Muto’s retirement is, as he faces Nakamura in one of the last shows with the gimmick and in his last show with the Muta gimmick on January 23rd in Yokohama, with the Muta on Tag teaming will spike. It will be interesting to see if this is a one off thing or if WWE talent shows up for other companies in the future. The match was announced today at the NOAH show at the new Ariake Arena.
I didn’t see the fight between Jake Paul and Anderson Silva but wasn’t surprised by the result. The fight was competitive with flashy totals in several rounds including some where Silva landed more. Paul by all accounts won the fight, winning rounds six through eight including an eighth round 10-8 by scoring a knockdown. Judge Dennis O’Connell had it 78-73 for Paul and gave him rounds 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 with a 10-8 eighth. Paul Calderon had it 77-74 and gave Paul 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 with an eighth of 10-8. Judge Chris Wilson had 78-73, Paul got 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8. There was controversy over the scoring and Silva admitted he made mistakes in the loss. It wasn’t the knockdown that won Paul the fight as he had won it unless there was a knockout in the last round, although if Silva had won the last round Calderon would have decided a tie but Paul did would still have won the other two cards.
After the fight, Paul called out Nate Diaz. Paul was immediately made a -260 favorite if this fight happens and I would imagine that if Paul beats an aging Silva he would definitely beat a much physically smaller Diaz. Uriah Hall, who won a decision over Le’Von Bell, a former NFL star, challenged Silva after the fight. According to the boxing rules, Paul would have the edge. The catch with the win was that Silva had to join Paul in his quest to bring more money and health care to MMA fighters.
The fight drew 2.1 million searches, which would be the tally for an above-average UFC show, but not a monster show. But this type of fight is also one that people are very interested in, but that doesn’t mean they will buy it. By the end of the week we should have at least one TV PPV number. Aside from the fight and Uriah Hall (18th yesterday with 100k) and Vasiily Lomachenko (15th yesterday with 100k) nothing from the week made the top 20 in boxing, MMA or wrestling. That means another UFC show with no significant interest to chart yesterday.

The Denver Broncos defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars today at Wembley Stadium in London. The game was broadcast on ITV in the UK and there was some AEW stuff broadcast at the stadium and on ITV including a commercial to see Rampage and Dynamite on the ITV Hub and something starring Britt Baker, Jamie Hayter and Andre Cisco of the Jaguars. I think there was something with Claudio Castagnoli and Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Orange Cassidy was also at the game. The game drew 86,215, the highest attendance ever for an NFL game in the UK
GCW’s Ninja Mack won the GHC jr. Heavyweight title from Hayata at tonight’s show at Ariake Arena. It was the first pro wrestling show in the new building. Mack did several backflips to the outside and then a Hiromu Takahashi-esque sunset flip power bomb to the floor. Hayata held his left arm and was unable to continue the match.
