You can click through to the Cap Friendly page and see the updated list. Note that the Maple Leafs have exactly 50 SPCs that count towards the limit. You actually have 52 in total. The very strong expectation is that some of the players who are now in the minors will be traded, either with no return or for fewer contracts coming back to balance the team’s needs. This is not an emergency, however, as the Leafs are not in the business of claiming anyone on waivers and will certainly not be adding contracts, but will be adding a trade.
What remains a bit of a mystery is whether John Tavares will play on Wednesday. The procedure if he does not do this is the following:
The team will play with the other 19 healthy players, or 11 F and 7 D. If that happens and Tavares remains injured, they are in what is called a “squad emergency” and can recall a player who has a cap hit of less than $850,000 to fill out. The only player with an NHL contract in the AHL who has a higher cap hit is Wayne Simmonds. Any other person on the minor list is considered an emergency recall. A player recalled in this manner does not count towards the salary cap but must leave once the injured player is fit to play again.
This is the process the Leafs must use to manage their roster under the current composition. With Timothy Liljegren returning, another, more permanent change must take place unless the Leafs are blessed with injuries again.
It’s a risky process, but it works well – the Maple Leafs didn’t invent it, nor are they the only team using it. This works until too many players get injured or a goalkeeper is out and you play with an EBUG as a backup for a game.
From now until Liljegren’s return, this is the roster, and if that sounds like the players on it and the players in the minors aren’t done competing for roster spots, that’s true. Every coach’s dream is a team that is never complacent and here it is.
