The single player campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is out now, having been released a week before the game’s full launch. Anyone who has pre-ordered the game can jump into the campaign and earn some additional rewards, which will be unlocked with multiplayer launch on October 28th.
The campaign consists of a fairly diverse set of missions, with stealth and puzzle-solving being a fairly integral part of the gameplay – alongside all the shooting and blasting these games are best known for. Some missions even have crafting.
During the campaign, you’ll also come across three safes that require combos to unlock. You can find this out yourself or turn to this handy guide to help you unlock the safes and get some pretty good loot inside. Here are all three locations, safe combination codes, and what you’ll find when you unlock them.
Unlocking all three safes gives you the Gentleman Thief achievement/trophy, so that’s an added bonus. Minor story spoilers ahead.
Safe #1: Mission 11 “El Sin Nombre”
You can find the first safe in the mission “El Sin Nombre”. You’ve traveled to Mexico at this point and are trying to set up a meeting with the mysterious cartel boss El Sin Nombre. You reach a point in the mission where you are given a mask and are allowed (mostly) to roam freely around a mansion, although certain areas are restricted by guards.
To find the first safe, exit the main entrance when exiting the elevator and walk until you come to an open gate on the left. Go through the gate. You’ll see a balcony that you can climb onto without luring the guards, then head up the stairs you’ll find until you come to a room.
You can silently take out the two guards you come across in this area. The one you see outside on the left patio is right in front of the room you need to get into.
Head down the outer hallway to the left of the stripper lounge until you reach a door on the left. This is Diego’s room. Go inside and go to the closed closet next to the bed. Inside you will find the safe.
You can find the combination code on the portrait in the same room.
It is 02-02-19. Inside you’ll find a Lockwood 300 shotgun and a bunch of armor plates.
Safe #2: Mission 13 “Alone”
You will find the next vault a short time later in the mission “Alone”. Soap has been separated from Ghost and has no weapons. Hurt requires you to find crafting materials to craft things like smoke bombs and the pry tool, which gets past locked doors and locked crates.
The first safe is in the cafe above, where you disarm a shotgun trap (and get the very useful shotgun in the process). Make sure you don’t jump to the bottom of the room you get into, as you won’t be able to go back. In the cafe you will find a locked office door that you need to get past with a Pry Tool. Once inside, you’ll find the safe.
If you look at the 2020 calendar on the wall, you will see that October 10 is circled. It says 40th birthday. You need to do some simple math here. If the birthday is the combination and the person turned 40 on October 10th, that means the birthday is 10/10/1980 and the safecode is 10-10-80.
Inside you’ll find a throwing knife and a silenced .50 GS pistol – useful items for a largely stealth-based mission.
Safe #3: Mission 13 “Alone”
I think it makes sense that these lower octane missions all contain safes. In these scenarios, you need the content more than in others. The third safe is found a little later in the mission “Alone” when you come to a garage.
You can find it by heading into the back room of the garage, although you may have to take out some guards along the way. You can also sneak past, but it’s definitely risky (I got into a firefight here when my cover was blown, but at that point I was armed enough to kill them all).
There is a computer in the garage where you can find the combination code for this safe: 37-60-80.
Inside you’ll find another throwing knife and a crossbow, adding even more to your stealthy arsenal.
That’s all of the safes in the game (unless more are left than hidden), although it’s possible we’ll see more safes or other puzzles in the upcoming raids that drop in December.
