Google’s Pixel Watch will get a big reveal on Thursday pixel eventwhere it will debut alongside Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro phones.
Google has previewed the Pixel Watch again I/O conference in May. The company revealed what the watch will look like and said it will have certain health-tracking features from its subsidiary Fitbit, but didn’t reveal much more. Most importantly, we still don’t know how much the Pixel Watch will cost or when it will be available for purchase.
Although Google has been making software for wearables for years, the pixel clock is the company’s first consumer smartwatch. It gives Google a chance to show off its vision for the ideal Android smartwatch, much like its Pixel phones did for Android phones.
Here’s everything we know – and have heard – about the Pixel Watch so far ahead of Google’s upcoming event.
It will launch alongside the Pixel 7 this fall
Google said in May that the Pixel Watch will officially launch this fall. With Google holding an event on October 6th, there’s a chance the Pixel Watch could launch shortly after. In that case, the Pixel Watch would follow a similar launch pattern to previous Google products. The Pixel 6, for example, debuted at one Event on October 19thwhile Google held a press conference on Sept 30 to introduce the Pixel 5 in 2020.
The Pixel Watch has a round design with adjustable bands
If there’s one thing Google was willing to share, it’s how the Pixel Watch looks. True to the leaks, Google’s first smartwatch has a circular face with a domed design and glass that looks like it’s curving over the edges. The watch is made from recycled stainless steel and has a tactile crown similar to the Apple Watch. Adjustable straps will also be available. The watch is expected to be available in black, silver and gold color options and will measure 40mm wide and 14mm thick, according to 9to5Google.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, the Pixel Watch has an eye-catching look that rivals the Apple watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and other high-end smartwatches. Google CEO Sundar Pichai was also spotted at the Code 2022 conference wore what appeared to be a pixel watch.
On September 22, just days before Google’s October 6 event, the company posted a video on YouTube shows the design of the watch. In the video, we take a closer look at the rotating crown on the side of the watch, how the Pixel Watch’s straps snap onto its case, and what the device’s watch faces will look like.
Google’s Wear OS software and apps will power the watch
Unsurprisingly, Google’s new smartwatch will run on its Wear OS platform. Google hasn’t said much about the watch’s software features other than calling them “smooth” and “easy to navigate”. Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of Devices and Services, described the operating system as “tapable, voice-controlled and sightable”. The company briefly demonstrated how apps like Google Maps, Wallet, Home and the Google Assistant will appear on the watch during its presentation.
It will integrate with Fitbit, but not replace it
Fitbit’s products aren’t going anywhere, as evidenced by those recently announced FitbitSense 2, verse 4 and Inspire 3. But you can expect to see some familiar ones Fitbit Features come on Google’s watch. These include continuous heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, and Active Zone Minutes, which measure the time you spend in specific heart rate zones during exercise. Google also showed how you can see Fitbit health stats like heart rate and steps right from the watch face.
What we don’t know, however, is which specific health-tracking sensors will be included in the Pixel Watch. However, it seems clear that the Pixel Watch will inherit more Fitbit functionality in the future. “It’s not one and done,” says James Park, co-founder of Fitbit, who currently heads Google’s wearables division. said Scott Stein of CNET. “We will continue to improve the software over time.
It will only be compatible with Android devices
The Pixel Watch should complement that Google’s Pixel devicesAccording to a Google spokesman, it will not be iPhone compatible. That’s probably one of the reasons why the Pixel Watch won’t replace Fitbit’s products, considering Fitbit’s watches and trackers work with both iOS and Android.
There will be a cellular option
Google will offer a 4G LTE option to the Pixel Watch, allowing it to maintain a cellular connection when a phone isn’t around. Fitbit’s smartwatches don’t come in a cellular-enabled option, so Google could differentiate the two product lines in that way.
There will be premium prices
Google hasn’t said how much the Pixel Watch will cost yet. But in a press conference, Osterloh said it would be labeled as a premium product. It’s unclear what that means, but it looks like it could be competitive with the Apple Watch Series 8 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 249). That aligns with rumors from 9to5Google and Pricebaba, with the former reporting that the cellular version could start at $399 in the US, and the latter saying the Wi-Fi-only version could cost between €250 and €350 in Europe.
Battery, processor and other specifications
Google hasn’t revealed much about the Pixel Watch’s specs, but 9to5Google has reported some details on the battery, processor, and storage capacity. The Pixel Watch will reportedly have a 300mAh battery capacity that will last around a day on a single charge. That sounds like it’s on par with the Apple Watch, although anecdotally I was able to get about a day and a half out of the new Series 8.
According to 9to5Google, the Pixel Watch will run on Samsung’s Exynos 9110 chip along with a coprocessor and will have 1.5 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. To put that in perspective, the average phone typically has around 8GB of RAM. The Apple Watch also has 32GB of storage, so it sounds like the Pixel Watch will have the same thing.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about the Pixel Watch, but we expect to learn more in the coming weeks.
