And just like that surveillance 1 is gone. Blizzard shut down the servers today at 12:00 p.m. ET in preparation for this surveillance 2 go live tomorrow. I’m excited for the sequel, which will bring many long-overdue steps forward for the series. Still, I want to take a moment to remember the original game.
i came in over watch a bit late. I first tried it out on a free weekend in November 2016, just after getting a PS4 (missed the Ana introduction, Sombra ARG, and the chaotic early days of the fully open hero select). I enjoyed my first time with it and bought it over watch while it was on sale. It wasn’t until the first Lunar New Year event and the launch of Capture the Flag that I really got hooked.
I haven’t counted my total playtime across all my accounts, but I’ve easily played over 5,000 hours over watch. As frustrated as I am by certain aspects, I really love the game. It’s my second favorite game of all time – nothing has ever come close to the top The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
The world, the characters, the gameplay, the skins, the voice acting, the interactions, the sprays… All this was obviously designed with care and love. Every single animated short is incredibly well done. The bright, vibrant art style was such a welcome pick-me-up for the many militaristic first-person shooters out there. The commitment to teamwork and focus on goals also drew me in, not to mention the ethos of positivity and inclusivity.
That over watch Community is wonderful for the most part too. All you have to do is ignore (and, more effectively, report) those who are poisoning the well. I’ve met quite a few players over the past few years, including those who create content around the game and others who create great workshop modes.
I could talk all day about this game and why it will stay with me for the rest of my life (in spirit at least). It’s been my favorite way to unwind or blow off some steam for the past six years. I jump into Mystery Heroes, by far my favorite game mode, to chill out for at least a few rounds most days. over watch is a warm blanket through which I only occasionally feel the unfortunate barbs of toxic players.
over watch has also proven to be extremely important for me on a professional level. I wrote my first article about the game in 2017 (a Doomfist guide, in case you’re wondering) and haven’t looked back since. Between cover overwatch, Overwatch League, the community, and what’s going on at Blizzard, I’ve written hundreds of stories about this corner of the gaming universe over the past five years. I’m pumped to keep going surveillance 2
After two and a half years over watch Since I’m effectively on hold, I’m ready to move on. Sure, as a Mei main weapon, I’ll miss freezing enemies with her primary fire. I’m disappointed that I can’t smash the Hanamura arcade while waiting for the doors to open. I’ll be sad to say goodbye to some of the classic tank duos like Rein and Zarya’s one-two and Winston and D.Va’s dive-double team.
But it’s time for something new.
surveillance 2 is a great evolution of the series for the most part. Games are more dynamic and active. It looks better than ever thanks to great hero, map, cosmetic and lighting designs. Sounds damn clumsy too. It’s disappointing that monetization and a few other aspects let things down.
At the moment, surveillance 2 is a rock solid foundation for many exciting things to come. I’ve seen some of the heroes, maps, and other updates coming in the next few seasons. Definitely worth looking forward to. Trust me on that. And then there’s a whole other half of the game coming next year with the co-op PVE experience.
Right now I’m all in the future and surveillance 2 I’m excited to be able to talk to people about this and write loads more stories about this thing. That means I’ll probably start the sequel tomorrow with a tear in my eye.
Goodbye, surveillance 1 You changed my life for the better.
