With the launch of iOS 16, Apple’s iPhone is becoming increasingly customizable. After the ability to swap icons using shortcuts in iOS 15, iOS 16 introduces a powerful lock screen. Now you can build your iPhone to feel like yours. Instead of just changing the wallpaper, you can also change the font, add widgets and create new types of wallpapers powered by emojis.
After trying out iOS 16, the new feature was quite fun. Your lock screen doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s anymore. It doesn’t have to be a blank canvas either. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. The iPhone lock screen is more powerful and personal than ever in iOS 16. So you can edit it and make it your own.
How to edit your iPhone lock screen on iOS 16
iOS 16 introduces a new way to customize your lock screen. Well, we say new, but it’s more of an extension of what came before. As in previous years, you can change your wallpaper from the Photos app or the Settings app. This guide focuses on what’s just been added: direct customization from the lock screen itself.
Step 1: On the lock screen, press and hold any space to open the new lock screen picker.
Step 2: Now tap either To adjust to change your current lock screen, or tap plus sign bottom right to create a new one.
Step 3: From the lock screen customization menu, choose your preferred wallpaper, widget choices, and font options. We’ll go into some of these in more detail later.
Step 4: Beat Finished and then Save as background pair once you are happy with your configuration.
We note this choosing here Set as background pair you should select if you want your lock screen background to be applied to your home screen. You have the option to select “Customize home screen” to further optimize your home screen. This includes choosing a discreet photo, adjusting blur levels, and the like. By default, for the purposes of this guide, we use the pair of wallpapers Possibility.
Step 5: bonus: Switching between lock screens once you set one up is easy. You can do this by swiping sideways on the lock screen selector, or by associating a specific lock screen with a specific focus mode. Once this focus mode is triggered, the new lock screen and associated customization will follow.
How to add widgets to your iOS 16 lock screen
With iOS 16, Apple brought widgets back to the lock screen. Well, not that they ever really left. Aside from the widget screen that sits to the left of your lock screen, you can now embed widgets directly into the lock screen itself. This will be pretty useful if you have an iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max with an always-on display and third-party apps like Google are already rolling out with support for this new system. This, combined with the inclusion of lock screen focus modes, could make your iPhone a more powerful tool than it already is.
Step 1: On your lock screen, hold and tap To adjust Button.
Step 2: Access the widget picker by tapping the widget box just below the clock. You can select up to four widgets. This can be a combination of two wide widgets, one wide widget and two smaller widgets, or four small widgets.
Step 3: Save your widget selection by tapping and selecting Done Set as wallpaper pair.
How to add photos to your iOS 16 lock screen
Using photos as the lock screen image works much the same as before, so we’re going to focus on a very specific type of photo: the Photo Shuffle feature. With this setting enabled, you can select a handful of your own photos and let your iPhone scroll through them without having to switch the lock screen.
Step 1: On your lock screen, hold and tap the blue plus button.
Step 2: Under Add new background imagebeat Photo shuffle.
Step 3: Beat Manually select photos to select the photos yourself or tap Use selected photos to choose the ones iOS chose for you. Once Photo Shuffle has properly indexed all of your photos, it will suggest things like pets, friends, and similar topics.
Step 4: Beat Finished and then Save as background pair when prompted. Your photos will now change at set intervals.
How to add emoji to your iOS 16 lock screen
Apple also added a new option for an emoji lock screen in iOS 16. You can now create a wallpaper with up to six emoji and give them different layouts.
Step 1: On your lock screen, hold and tap the blue plus button.
Step 2: Beat emoticons on the Add new background image Side.
Step 3: You’ll see a preselected đŸ˜€ emoji. You can deselect this by deleting it from the keyboard and adding up to six of your own.
Step 4: Now that you’ve selected your emojis, you can choose from layout options including small grid, medium grid, large grid, rings, and spiral – paired with a background color of your choice. Each comes with its own fresh and fun design.
Step 5: Beat Set as wallpaper pair and enjoy your new home and lock screen!
Apple’s iOS 16 might not be a complete overhaul like Android 12, but it’s a definite change in the way people can use their iPhones. Is it for the better? Some may not like the complicated workaround if you want to change only your home screen. It’s only natural. Of course, with more complexity comes more complexity. The iPhone has come of age, and the lock screen is just the latest piece to end puberty.
