Jamie Lee Curtis is among the celebrities outraged by Kanye West’s behavior on social media. Over the weekend, the 45-year-old rapper’s Instagram and Twitter accounts were hit with restrictions after he posted anti-Semitic messages. Curtis, whose father was Jewish, attended today show on Monday and was visibly emotional when West’s tweets were addressed.
“I woke up and burst into tears,” Curtis told Hoda Kotb. “What are you doing? It’s bad enough that fascism is on the rise around the world, but on Twitter? On a portal to throw that in, like Jews haven’t had it hard enough? … As if Asians I do not have enough. I mean, it was just gross.”
Twitter removed West’s message, which read: “I’m a little tired tonight but when I wake up I’m going to die [sic] con 3 About JEWISH PEOPLE… The funny thing is that I can’t actually be an anti-Semite because black people are actually Jews too… You played with me and tried to blacken anyone who opposes your agenda.
Kotb, who has interviewed Curtis many times, noted that she “never seen eyes so angry.”
“I woke up and… I thought [about] my grandparents,” Curtis replied. “It’s just despicable behavior, I hope he gets help. I hope his children get help from him. It’s terrible.”
Curtis added, “And if we don’t respond, who are we? What does that say about people not responding?”
Many public figures responded to West’s posts, including Sarah Silverman. Jack Antonoff and the rapper’s former boyfriend, John Legend.
The Black-Jewish Entertainment Alliance (BJEA) took issue with West’s comments in a statement to Yahoo Entertainment:
Yes’s recent statements about the Jewish community are hurtful, insulting and false. They perpetuate clichés that have been the basis of discrimination and violence against Jews for thousands of years. Words like these tear at the fabric of the black-Jewish relationship.
The black and Jewish communities must stand together on incidents like this to make it clear that trading in hateful stereotypes is unacceptable — and that one entertainer’s words do not reflect the views of an entire community.
The Anti-Defamation League also reacted.
West, legally known as Ye, has been defiant about his controversial beliefs since his “White Lives Matter” stunt at Paris Fashion Week a week ago. With his social media platforms restricted, West took to YouTube on Monday to post a new vlog entitled Last week.
The 30-minute documentary samples a new song by West with the lyrics “You a fake b**** / You don’t really love Ye, go listen to Drake, b**** / You don’t have no idea what it takes, b**** / Go listen to Lil Baby, go listen to Future, b****.”
Another scene shows West meeting Adidas over his strained partnership with the company. The session begins with the Grammy winner playing a pornographic video to executives.
“Come on,” says one of the men, his face blurred as he tries to get West to put down the phone.
West was apparently trying to instill in executives an “extreme unease,” according to one of his team members, similar to the uneasiness the musician feels when he thinks Adidas stole his ideas. Adidas, which has been working with West since 2013, announced last week that the company is reviewing its relationship with West. The meeting included in West’s vlog appears to have taken place three weeks ago due to mention of the rapper’s gap deal, which ended on September 15.
Another clue that the vlog isn’t actually from last week is the ending scene with West’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian as the two get together to watch daughter North West’s basketball game. However, TMZ did get pictures of North’s game on Friday night, and both stars are wearing – very notably – different outfits. West was last seen wearing one of his White Lives Matter shirts, and Kardashian reportedly “snubbed” him at the gym. The Kardashians star hasn’t publicly responded to the latest controversy that has engulfed her former partner – but her family has weighed in.
