T-Mobile's $325 suitcase is legit, designed for travelers who like to stay connected

T-Mobile today introduced Un-carrier On, a magenta suitcase designed to keep travelers connected. Developed in partnership with publicly traded company Samsara Luggage, the product includes features like wireless charging (making it the only carry-on suitcase to come with it). It also has a detachable power bank with USB-C Power Delivery charging. This allows users to charge faster, which helps them have full batteries on the mobile devices they travel with, whether it’s an iPhone, an Android device or something else.

The Un-Carrier On is a great travel companion for those who need to stay connected while travelling

Tag Smart technology allows users to track their personal belongings “from takeoff to landing” during a flight. The suitcase is designed with a flat top to create a workspace for the suitcase owners and to give them a place to put a laptop to do some work before boarding their flights. Or you can while away the time at your gate by streaming a movie or episode of your favorite TV series while waiting for your flight’s boarding announcement.

The case also includes an eight-pouch packing kit to, as T-Mobile puts it, “ensure your underwear and your toothbrush never touch again.”

Atara Dzikowski, Co-Founder and CEO of Samsara Luggage, says: “This collaboration is a natural fit and brings together two companies with a keen interest in reinventing the travel experience using technology. The Un-carrier On is a game changer for travelers and shows how combining durable design with functional technology can pave the way for the world of travel and technology. As a travel lifestyle brand, we believe in the power of connection and connectivity and Knowing that Un-Carrier On will meet the needs of travelers as they enter the busy travel season and beyond.”

The Un-carrier On is available at TravelMagenta.com website and costs $325 plus tax. Shipping is free and pre-orders are being accepted starting today. The case will ship later this month and the Un-Carrier On will be available until stocks run out.
At first we weren’t sure if it was a real product. You may remember when T-Mobile introduced Phone BoothE, which was intended to be a soundproof “vertical, rectangular cube” available to T-Mobile subscribers on the streets of NYC, Washington DC, and Seattle. The Phone BoothE allowed users to charge their devices’ batteries, and a screen was available for video calls and web browsing. The display could also be used as a background for selfies.

Is Un-Carrier On real or is it a joke like Phone BoothE?

But as it turns out, the whole thing was an April Fool’s joke with a subtle swipe at AT&T’s 5G Evolution service, which really was 4G. This author couldn’t tell if the Phone BoothE was real until T-Mobile CEO John Legere said in a video that you know the Phone BoothE is real because it has an “E” at the end. This was a shot at the controversial 5GE status bar icon that AT&T subscribers would see on their phones when connected to the carrier’s fake 5G signals. And it revealed the phone booth for what it was; a joke.

But the Un-Carrier On case is a real product T-Mobile really sells. And with the holiday travel season approaching, the suitcase is a great tool for the busy person who is always connected online. And yes, it also makes a great Christmas present for that man or woman you know who is always on the go, be it for business, pleasure or both.

Mike Sievert, CEO of T-Mobile, said of the Un-carrier On, “I know there’s a lot to unpack here. Why is T-Mobile, a wireless service provider, launching a suitcase? Well, we’re the un-carrier – and travel is sort of our bag. So we made one. A pocket. A real bag. T-Mobile customers are already covered with the best travel benefits and stay connected with Coverage Beyond on America’s skyways and around the world. But in true un-carrier fashion, we didn’t stop there. We made a smart suitcase to store your belongings too. Literally. “
