In March of this year, Trades revealed that Marvel Studios had officially greenlit the much-rumored debut of Nova. Fans were thrilled to learn that one of Marvel’s most beloved cosmic heroes is finally making his debut in the MCU. Sabir Pirzada is currently writing the project. Pirzadas previous work with Marvel Studios moon knight and Mrs Miracle.
So far there are no further details about the project. There is no publicly assigned director, nor is there a set release date. Fans don’t even know which version of Nova will take the title for the MCU. The most popular iterations to take the mantle are Richard Rider (the Original Nova) and Sam Alexander (New Generation).
We provided a glimpse of what Marvel was planning to do with the character by introducing Rider and Alexander to the project. However, details on how Marvel would approach this project have been relatively scarce. But now we have some new tidbits that might unravel the mystery of The Man Called Nova.
The Disney+ question
One of the first questions fans asked was whether nova would premiere as a feature film or project on Disney+. The trades at that time could not confirm either possibility. The consensus was nova would be more plausible as a Disney+ premiere than as a movie.
From what we’re being told by trusted sources, it appears the speculative consensus is on the up. That nova Project premieres on Disney+. When exactly can we expect the premiere of this project? It may be a while before we officially confirm a release date. After all, this is still in the writing stages, and what makes it all the more difficult to predict could be due to the format Marvel plans to present it.
Nova: A Special Presentation by Marvel Studios
Earlier this month, we announced that Marvel Studios plans to develop additional Marvel Studios Special Presentations Werewolf at night. This report discussed the various scenarios in which Marvel planned to use the special presentation format. One way was to develop projects that had previously been announced as Disney+ projects in development, while the other was to introduce new characters to the MCU that don’t necessarily have as many, if any, ties to the MCU.
The reason is that these spin-off projects are better for both audiences and productions in the long run. In this report we have mentioned some examples of projects that could be candidates for the special presentation format. Some examples include the untitled Okoye Show, the rumored Ten Rings spin-off centered on Xialing, or already announced projects, e.g nova and miracle man.
We have received information from our trusted sources that nova will be a special presentation by Marvel Studios. This presentation will premiere on Disney+ on a date not yet announced. And while details on the show’s plot are scarce, predictions can be made about the upcoming special.
What story could be told in a nova Special
To have nova since a special presentation means that the story being told will most likely be some kind of origin story. While we haven’t heard anything new regarding the special’s storyline, we’ll base it on the premise that the storyline will still feature both Richard Rider and Sam Alexander. If so, we could see this special taking the path of introducing Sam Alexander and loosely basing it on his origin story from 2013’s Nova Run.
The story could lead to Sam searching for his father Jesse Alexander, a Nova Corp member who has gone missing. Along the way, he encounters another decorated Nova Corp member, Richard Rider, who was also searching for his father, along with his Nova helmet. Sam finds the special can evolve into a mentor-trainee story, with Richard teaching Sam how to use the helmet just in time to fight an oncoming alien menace.
After the decisive fight, the special may end with Richard Sam keeping the helmet so he can uphold his father’s legacy. This would allow Sam to stay on Earth with his newfound cosmic powers, promptly allowing Richard to return to the cosmos until Marvel Studios needs them again. This special would also accelerate Marvel’s theme of introducing the next generation of heroes already established in the MCU, while both heroes remain active for now.
How the special presentation format benefits Nova
Previously, we talked about how this particular presentation format benefits viewers and productions. Audiences don’t have to wait 6-9 weeks to get the full story Marvel hopes to tell with the character. Also, the specials will have longer runtimes than most Disney+ episodes. This allows more story and development to take place in a special over a longer period of time than can be covered in 3-4 episodes.
Productions can improve quality the less work they have to cover on a tight schedule. This also improves the factor of casting and filming schedules. Marvel Studios could use the “foot-in-the-door” technique on these projects.
When looking for actors for these productions, it is easier to attract well-known actors to a project when the shooting schedule is 2-3 weeks compared to several months of shooting. If we get actors to participate in smaller projects, chances are they’ll come back for bigger projects in the future.
Another benefit of this format is to gauge audience reactions to the character presented by Marvel. If the audience response is mostly positive, the character could appear more often in other projects in the future. Much like Werewolf By Night, Elsa Bloodstone and Man-Thing will play a more prominent role in the future of the MCU, either in a team like the Midnight Sons or elsewhere.
