Automakers typically build vehicles based on the tastes and preferences of their target customers. They have to, especially since customers may not buy their vehicle if they don’t like it. Interestingly, while some customers are easy to please, others are quite picky about their choice.
Automakers, for example, are building more vehicles with automatic transmissions. Because more and more customers want vehicles that are easier and more comfortable to drive. A vehicle with an automatic transmission makes sense because the driver does not have to worry about shifting gears, especially in stop-and-go traffic.
That said, there is still a good, albeit declining, number of drivers – especially purists – who prefer manual transmission cars. Because of this, automakers offer manual versions of their vehicles. For example, Toyota is finally putting a manual gearbox in the GR Supra.
Porschemeanwhile offers a new edition of the 911 Carrera that will inspire purists with a manual transmission and an extremely light character. The Porsche 911 Carrera T aims to offer a puristic driving experience that non-manual models cannot offer.
A light Carrera T with a manual gearbox
Purists can cite several reasons why they prefer manual transmissions. While automatic transmissions offer convenience, their manual counterparts provide a better connection between human and vehicle. For purists, there is nothing quite like enjoying a real driving experience where the driver appears to be mechanically connected to the car.
At Porsche, models with the letter designation “T” are typically touring models that could offer a puristic driving experience with particularly sporty equipment. The latest model with this letter is the 911 Carrera T – a lightweight sports car with a seven-speed manual transmission as standard.
Nestled between the 911 Carrera and the 911 Carrera S, the 911 Carrera achieves sportiness not through increased performance, but through weight trimming. This is essentially one of the reasons it comes with a manual gearbox, which is considerably lighter than an automatic gearbox. An eight-speed PDK is also available for the 911 Carrera T.
As with the other T models, Porsche made the 911 Carrera T lighter by eliminating the rear seats and reducing insulation. The carmaker also installed lightweight glass and a lightweight battery. At 1,500 kg, the 911 Carrera T with manual transmission is around 30 kg lighter than the 911 Carrera with PDK.
The same Porsche 911 Carrera power, but sportier
The 911 Carrera T is powered by the same biturbo engine as in the 911 Carrera, delivering 379 hp of maximum power and 332 lb-ft of maximum torque. Combining this power with its light nature, the 911 Carrera T can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and to a top speed of 180 km/h. The 911 Carrera T borrows the Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear axle differential lock from the borderline 911 Carrera S.
Also standard in the 911 Carrera T are the Sport Chrono Package and the PASM sports suspension, which allows the lightweight athlete to sit closer to the ground. Rear axle steering is available as an option for the 911 Carrera T and is standard from the Carrera S onwards.
According to Porsche, the 911 Carrera rides on titanium gray Carrera S wheels: 20-inch front rims with 245/35 tires and 21-inch rear wheels with 305/30 rubber. The 911 Carrera T has the GT sports steering wheel, the sports exhaust system and the sports seats Plus (4-way, electric) as standard.
Distinctive exterior with gray accents and elements
On the outside, the Porsche 911 Carrera T stands out from other models with dark gray accents and agate gray elements (upper and lower lining of the exterior mirrors, door lettering, rear lettering and trim strips on the trunk lid grille). The exterior also comes with a windshield with a gray top tint and tailpipes in high-gloss black.
Customers can choose from a wide range of colors for their new 911 Carrera T. There is a choice of four solid colors (black, white, guards red and racing yellow), four metallic paint finishes (jet black, gentian blue, ice gray and GT silver) and special colors (chalk, carmine red, python green, ruby star neo and shark blue). You can customize the colors via Porsche’s Paint to Sample.
Sporty interior with adaptive sports seats Plus
In the interior, the four-way sports seats Plus are standard equipment for the new 911 Carrera T, trim strips in black matt and inlays in black high-gloss round off the package. The Carrera T interior package with seat belts in the contrasting colors slate gray or lizard green is optionally available. These contrasting colors are also available for the decorative stitching, the 911 lettering embossed on the headrests, the stripes on the seat centers and the lettering and the stitching on the floor mats.
As an option, Porsche offers the Adaptive Sports Seats Plus (18-way, electric) for the 911 Carrera T, but the sportier lightweight full bucket seats (with Race Tex seat center panel) are also available as an option.
The Carrera T interior package would add an optional extended leather cabin that wraps the armrests on the door panels and center console. The upper parts of the instrument panel and the door panels are also covered with the same material.
