The company said that while it is seeing a gradual improvement in the supply of semiconductors and other components, “considering past manufacturing and sales performance, we have revised the forecast for Nintendo Switch hardware sales units for the fiscal year.”

Despite this, the company revised its forecast for net sales (+3.1%) and net profit (17.1%) for the year, partly citing a weaker yen as a reason.

Nintendo said it sold 19.2% fewer Switch consoles in the first six months of the current fiscal year than in the same period last year, which it says was partly due to the shortage of semiconductors.

Nintendo’s new forecast of 19 million hardware sales (up from 21 million) represents a 9.8% year-over-year decline and a 37% decline from fiscal 2020. However, it should be noted that Nintendo is known for its conservative forecasts.

“It’s odd that Nintendo has cut its Switch shipment forecast by 10% despite a broad consensus that chip shortages are easing,” Tokyo-based industry analyst Serkan Toto told Bloomberg. “I expect the next quarter to be another home run for Nintendo, thanks largely to the release of the new Pokemon title next week.”

Nintendo said: “Regarding the Nintendo Switch business during the first half of this fiscal year (April to September 2022), every title released during this period has sold well, with Splatoon 3 off to a good start with sales of 7.90 million units and Nintendo Switch Sports with 6.15 million units, Mario Strikers: Battle League [9 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/games/super-mario-games/mario-strikers-battle-league/”>Mario Strikers: Battle League with 2.17 million units and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 with 1, 72 million units sold.

“Additionally, we saw stable sales of titles released through the end of previous fiscal years, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling 3.07 million units (for cumulative sales of 48.41 million units) and Kirby and the Forgotten Land 2 .61 million units sold (for cumulative sales of 5.27 million units).

A slide from Nintendo’s latest financial results.

“Sales of titles from other software publishers also grew steadily, bringing the total number of millions of titles sold during this period to 15, including titles from these other software publishers.

“As a result of these factors, total software sales increased 1.6% year over year to 95.41 million units. On the other hand, hardware units sold fell 19.2% year over year to 6.68 million units, due to factors including a lack of semiconductor and other component shipments.

“Regarding our digital business for the dedicated video game platform, downloadable versions of Nintendo Switch software sold well and Nintendo Switch Online sales also increased.

“In addition, sales of add-on content increased not only for Nintendo titles but also titles from other software publishers, along with sales of download-only titles, which helped push digital sales to 187, 8 billion yen, up 30.2% for the year. in the year.”

Earlier this year, Switch was already confirmed as the best-selling Nintendo home console of all time, beating out the Wii with 101.63 million. However, it still has a long way to go before it can compete with Nintendo DS [167 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/nintendo/ds/”>154.02 million units sold of Nintendo DS and Game Boy (and Game Boy Color) at 118.69 m.

Outside of Nintendo’s own consoles only PlayStation 4 [5,615 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/playstation/ps4/”>PlayStation 4 (116.6m) and PlayStation 2 [237 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/playstation/ps2/”>PlayStation 2 (155 million) has surpassed Nintendo Switch.

On Tuesday, Nintendo also announced the formation of a new subsidiary with DeNA Co Ltd, the company behind many of its mobile games.

The new company, Nintendo Systems Co Ltd, will open in Tokyo in April 2023, will be 80% owned by Nintendo and will focus on “the development and operation of services to strengthen the digitization of Nintendo’s business”.
