News update from Monday
– Bryan and I will be back tonight covering Raw, PWG, Fallout from Crown Jewel, AEW Dynamite and the rest of the breaking news with Wrestling Observer Radio. For those who are subscribers, you can ask questions about any topic during the show.
– Tonight’s Raw is from Wilkes-Barre, PA. The number should be up significantly from last week as it’s not Halloween and it’s coming from Saturday’s Crown Jewels show. Tonight’s game is the Baltimore Ravens vs. the New Orleans Saints, so Lamar Jackson switches from last week’s Dynamite to this week’s Raw. It’s not a game that should hurt Raw more than a normal week. Raw had just under 4,600 tickets in circulation, which is one of the smaller Raw crowds this year but above most of the recent Dynamite crowds.
– Crown Jewel seems to have been the most viewed and most talked about version of the series to date. Some of the previous shows were on Thursdays, so obviously a Saturday show will have more viewers. But Google searches for the event were 300,000, more than usual for a B show, and two-thirds of those were for Logan Paul. The belief is that Peacock had more viewers than any other show in Saudi Arabia. Keep in mind that Peacock’s subscribers since this time are last year and slightly higher than the spring, but still there were early reports where it was the most watched and searched. So, from a business point of view, the main event was a success. Obviously from an in-ring standpoint it was a huge hit.
– We are looking for coverage of Raw at Wilkes-Barre with Main Event Matches and Dark Matches to [email protected]
– We’re also looking for your thoughts on WWE Crown Jewel and NJPW Battle Autumn, so feel free to give a thumbs up, thumbs down, or a thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]
– Once again, Apex’s UFC show failed to crack the top 20 in Google searches on Saturday. Both Crown Jewel and Logan Paul were 9th and 10th respectively. 20th was 50,000 so the UFC show made less.
– Cain Velasquez had his pre-trial hearing in San Jose today. No decision had been made as of the last report, but the courthouse saw several officers involved in the case testify. A number of MMA fighters were there as well as Javier Mendez, Velasquez’s career head coach, and others from AKA. One of the officers at the scene, who described Velasquez as cooperative and respectful, said Velasquez told him his son wasn’t the same after he was allegedly abused and that his son wasn’t the only child he believed that it had been abused. Velasquez has been held without ties since the beginning of the year.
– ESPN and others noted that there was an investigation into betting on the fight between Darrick Minner and Shayilan Nueredanbieke on Saturday’s UFC show. The money was heavy as Neurdanbieke won by KO in the first round after rumors surfaced Minner was injured. Some sports books took the fight off the boards. The odds jumped from -220 to -420 four hours before the fight started. The fight ended when Minner executed a left kick for 30 seconds, grabbed his left leg and Nuerdanbieke dropped Minner with one knee, finishing him with his elbows on the ground in 1:07. US Integrity alerted game regulators to the move three hours before the fight began. US Integrity has no enforcement authority to take fights out of blocks and recommends them. ESPN reported a source in Minner’s camp said Minner’s left knee was injured while going into the right one. The UFC said its betting integrity partner, Don Best Sports, will conduct a thorough investigation into the fight and report the results. “At this time, we have no reason to believe that any of the athletes involved in the fight, or anyone associated with their teams, behaved in an unhealthy or irresponsible manner.” Odds maker Joey Odessa said he noticed the late betting interest and was aware that notifications were being sent to sportsbooks and said it didn’t mean the solution was there, but some people definitely knew something. It’s worth noting that this didn’t happen in the better-known Aljamain Sterling vs. TJ Dillashaw fight where Dillashaw came in injured, but obviously people didn’t know that.
– Drew McIntyre is currently on a promotional tour of India. Omos was in Nigeria as part of the company looking for new talent in the country. Omos saw his family for the first time in 14 years this weekend.
– Roman Reigns will be promoted to SmackDown on Friday. He is expected in Survivor Series, whether that will be a title match or a War Games match is likely to be revealed on Friday.
– Tales from the Territories will cover Polynesian Pro Wrestling, the company run by Dwayne Johnson’s grandfather Peter Maivia and, after his death, his grandmother Lia Maivia. They will apparently be covering the 1961 match between Neff Maiava and Curtis Iaukea, which is the most famous match in Hawaiian wrestling history due to the post-match brawl with the Hawaiians and Samoans. This was long before Polynesian Pro and was the promotion of Ed Francis that marked the heyday of wrestling there in the ’60s.
– PWInsider reports that WWE will return to Saudi Arabia in May with no definitive date.
– Wrestle Tix lists 16,903 tickets for Saturday’s UFC at Madison Square Garden, with 1,718 seats still unsold. The main event is Israel Adesayna vs. Alex Periera for the women’s middleweight title and Carla Esparza vs. Zhang Weili for the women’s strawweight title in one of the better mani classes of the year.
