Canada’s Maya Laylor broke two Commonwealth Games records on Tuesday in the women’s 76kg weightlifter in Birmingham, England, en route to a gold medal.

The 27-year-old Toronto native lifted 100kg on her first snatch to take the lead in the program before setting Commonwealth records of 128kg in the clean and jerk and 228kg overall.

Silver medalist Taiwo Liadi of Nigeria lifted 96 kg in the snatch and 120 kg in the clean and jerk, finishing 12 kg behind the Canadian.

Maximina Uepa from Nauru took bronze with a total of 216 kg.

Maya Laylor sets two Commonwealth records on her way to weightlifting gold

The Canadian set game records with her clean and jerk lift of 128 kg and total weight of 228 kg on Tuesday.

Laylor also took gold in the same category at the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent. Two years earlier, the Canadian won the 71 kg title in Apia.

Her gold medal adds a seventh grand prize to Canada at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Spence takes 3rd bronze

Emma Spence, of Cambridge, Ontario, won her third Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the women’s balance beam event.

The 19-year-old gymnast had 5,100 points in difficulty and 7.966 points in form, finishing with 13.066 points, 0.400 points less than gold medalist Kate McDonald of Australia. Georgia Godwin, also from Australia, took silver with 13,433 points.

The Canadian gymnast’s performance on the balance beam led to her third bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Spence also took bronze in Saturday’s women’s team event and Sunday’s women’s all-around final.

The Canadian almost added a fourth bronze medal to her tally in the women’s floor exercise, finishing just 0.034 seconds behind Australia’s Emily Whitehead’s bronze-worthy 13,000 score.

Cassandra Lee of Toronto finished fifth just behind Spence.

Felix Dolci of Laval, Que., just missed out on the podium in the men’s vault and parallel bars finals, finishing fourth in both disciplines.

Canada’s men’s 3×3 basketball team wins bronze

Canada’s 3×3 basketball teams win medals four to four at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The capable men’s team took bronze in a 13-12 win over Scotland on Tuesday. Bikramjit Gill led the Canadians with five points while Alex Dean Johnson added four and Jordan Zaki Jensen-Whyte scored three.

On Monday, Canada was narrowly defeated by England 13:12 in the semifinals.

All three of Canada’s other teams in the sport have already secured medals after making it to the finals in the able-bodied women’s tournament and the men’s and women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball competitions.

The three medal competition session begins Tuesday at 2:30pm ET.

Both wheelchair 3×3 basketball teams will fight for gold against Australia, while the able-bodied women will play against England.
