The highly anticipated remake of the Capcom classic Resident Evil 4 is fast approaching and recent fan glimpses of a wealth of gameplay and story sequences within the Resident Evil showcase excited many more. Given Capcom’s plans to create a new experience while staying true to the nature of the original, it was clear that there were plenty of famous moments in the reveal.
Nonetheless, there are a significant number of distinct differences from what was only shown in the village section and based on this, this is most likely to be prevalent throughout the journey Resident Evil 4.
5/5 opening sequence
Those who know Resident Evil 4The intense opening sequence of , will have noticed the massive differences Capcom implemented in this remake. Based on this revelation, it seems like the first house Leon encounters will be much larger and will contain more rooms and enemies to contend with compared to before. The player will also come across one of the two police officers who would travel with Leon to his destination in search of Ashley Graham.
From the start, the setting seems much more unsettling, quieter, darker, and isolating as Leon wanders the village, still collecting his thoughts on what is actually happening. While the original certainly had moments of scare, including the opening sequence, this time things get a lot more serious.
4/5 hostile aggressiveness
The original title was well known for its sense of isolation and lack of help for most of its run. Enemies pursued and charged relentlessly, often leaving players intimidated by the overwhelming numbers. With the showcase showing just how much more aggressive the Ganados will be in this remake, fans will know their experience is being taken to a whole other level.
Given the changed controls and Leon’s ability to now aim and move simultaneously, Capcom has significantly increased the aggressive nature of enemies and increased how quickly they can charge at the player. This will help maintain a balance to retain the seat edge feel in the original while also capturing a new and more tense experience of attempting to fend off enemies.
3/5 Quick equipment for weapons
One of the biggest complaints regarding the original was the need to pause the game to access and equip different weapons, but that was obviously due to the development opportunities at the time. Now that the RE Engine remake is on the horizon, players will have the ability to switch weapons on the fly and plunge into combat without losing momentum.
Along with the advanced controls compared to what many called “tank controls” in the original, this will be of great benefit to players looking for a fluid and smooth experience, avoiding any complications Resident Evil 6 contained which players were interfering with the ability to pause the game.
2/5 Enemy Attacks
This is one of the more important changes on a broader scale, along with all the other differences. It’s a change that opts more for the idea of adding new and unpredictable scenarios. A large majority of the attacks present in the original were geared more towards Leon’s usual grab and choke, ax throw, or weapon attack.
This time around, it looks like the Ganados and possibly other enemies later in the game will hit the player, jump at the player at a greater distance, and even hold Leon more purposefully for Dr. Salvador comes and finishes the job. As such, an innovation will keep new and familiar players engaged in combat with enemies, as some might expect the original’s usual attack patterns, but then be in for a surprise when enemies employ different tactics to bring Leon down.
1/5 Horror Focused Tone
Since Capcom aimed to ensure that this remake is not identical to the original, but reinvented and improved in several aspects, the change in tone was predictable. Many fans know this from the first encounter with the first villager as well as from the ambush in the Village Resident Evil 4 Make new will stick to it resident Evil of the franchise’s original horror roots and take a serious, down-to-earth approach. Both the gameplay showcase and story trailer evoke the terrifying concept of Leon being left alone in his quest to find and rescue the President’s daughter.
Despite the usual Leon quips and one-liners still present in the game, Capcom did a very good job of conveying the idea that this isn’t going to be fun and a game like the original, which at times feels frivolous and safe less realistic felt aspects. This will be more like the canceled version of Resident Evil 4 where the plot was supernatural, darker in tone, and had the solid classic resident Evil camera angle. Thankfully, players will now be able to get as close as possible to this unreleased version, with this remake bringing a different flavor to a cult classic.
Resident Evil 4 Remake will be released on March 24, 2023.
