If you enjoyed the Gunsmith feature first introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019, then you’re in for a treat! Infinity Ward has now introduced the Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith 2.0 and it appears to be a massive improvement over the previous system.
Check out the trailer along with details on the new weapon customization system in Modern Warfare 2!
Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith 2.0:
Developed by Infinity Ward, the new Gunsmith remasters this vital loadout creation tool Modern Warfare (2019) for a more customizable way to build a weapon.
Based in part on insights from the community, along with Infinity Ward’s commitment to making a broader and more exploratory gunsmith, the initial characteristics of this gunsmith can be defined by the following bullet points:
- weapon platforms. Grow and upgrade a weapon well beyond its class to truly customize your loadout. Evolve your weapon platform from an assault rifle to an SMG, DMR and/or LMG by swapping receivers on a specific platform and using a full suite of attachments to support your weapon’s role.
- progress overhaul. Thanks to weapon platforms and branching progress, attachments are shared within and between weapon platforms. Depending on the attachment, it is either unlocked for all weapons within a platform or for ALL weapons in the entire game. Expect fewer replays and reasonable challenges to unlock attachments and cloaks… And if you’re longing for a journey toward mastery, don’t worry: we’ve got that planned too.
- shooting range. Test your creation without sacrificing K/D in the Gunsmith. Further information follows Call of Duty: Next.
In addition, Infinity Ward is also introducing weapon platforms.
Unlike previous years where each weapon was its own family, Weapons Platforms streamlines progression and creates attachment pools for easier switching between playstyles via the Gunsmith. Although some weapon platforms still contain one weapon – for example the RPG-7 and Lockwood MK2 “Cowboy Rifle” – other, more modern platforms can have three, four or even five different weapons.
in the Modern Warfare II, Operators earn each base weapon platform from each manufacturer on their progression journey to military rank (rank 1 through 55). The first weapon unlocked on a weapon platform is known to its receiver, a weapon’s core, which determines its primary use and power.
For example: The M4 above, the first weapon platform unlocked, is from Tempus Armaments and is classified as an Assault Rifle.
After selecting a primary or secondary weapon and going to the gunsmith, you’ll see the Receiver attachment in addition to slots for muzzles, barrels, magazines, and other parts you’re already familiar with.
- How to swap receivers in the gunsmith using the M4 and M16 as an example. Notice how all of the attachments are retained even though this weapon is switched to an entirely new one.
Just like previous Call of Duty games, players can level up their weapons to unlock attachments. In MW2, however, these unlocks include receivers.
Changing a weapon’s receiver completely changes what the weapon is; It is considered a “new” weapon when creating a loadout, but still lives in the same weapon platform.
Each new receiver can be seen in their assigned weapon categories on the loadout screen. However, when editing a weapon that is part of a larger weapon platform, you can simply swap out the receivers in the gunsmith.
As you level up a weapon platform, you unlock two types of attachments:
The first is for the specific weapon platform – receiver, barrel, stock, rear grip and magazine. These can be used jointly by all recipients within the platform.
The second is attachments, which can be used across the board EVERYONE Weapons they can equip. These are optics, ammunition, lower barrels and foregrips, and muzzles. This allows you to collect an arsenal of attachments that just need to be unlocked once.
There’s still a lot more to dissect when it comes to MW2’s Gunsmith 2.0, and you can read the first breakdown here.
Don’t forget, Call of Duty Next airs tomorrow and we’ll see a full reveal of Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer, Warzone 2.0 and more!
