Key storylines leading up to the FIFA World Cup
While the world will watch as the talents of France’s Kylian Mbappe, Canada’s Alphonso Davies, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi take the field, some notable names will be absent from this year’s event.
The French champions will be without N’Golo Kante for the tournament as the Chelsea midfielder suffered a setback last week while recovering from a hamstring injury.

England defender Kyle Walker underwent groin surgery in early October and is doubtful for the tournament.
The status of other key players is yet to be determined.
Bayern Munich’s German winger Leroy SanĂ© suffered a thigh muscle tear in his club’s win against Freiburg last weekend, with no timetable set for his return. Juventus winger Angel Di Maria is expected to return in early November and will be ready to join Argentina’s squad in Qatar as he works his way back from a hamstring injury.
Richarlison of Brazil suffered a calf injury during Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Everton in the Premier League last week. However, the forward is expected to play at the World Cup.
