I’m sorry Andy Sachs.
The Devil Wears Prada fans were thrilled when Anne Hathaway stepped out at New York Fashion Week last month in a nearly identical outfit as her character wore in the film – but according to the actress, her fitting moment was purely coincidental.
Hathaway, 39, wore a brown croc-embossed Michael Kors jacket at the designer’s show, which she wore over a black turtleneck dress and wore her hair in a pulled-back style with bangs that evoked memories of Andy in the film.
She even sat on the show alongside Anna Wintour, who was the inspiration for Runway Editor-in-Chief (and Andy’s boss) Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada.
“It was kind of crazy, wasn’t it?” Hathaway opened up about the outfit during a performance this morning “Today’s showrevealed she “accidentally” worked with her famous character.
The ‘Princess Diaries’ actress explained she “was supposed to put something else on, the shoes didn’t fit, that was the other outfit that came”.
Even her Andy-esque hair was pure coincidence.
“And then my hairstylist, who was so nice — I’d never worked with him before — was just like, ‘Oh I know what to do,’ and he tossed my hair up in a ponytail,” she said, continuing , “I looked in the mirror and I was like, ‘Oh that’s funny, I wonder if anyone will notice.'”
Laughing, the star added, “You noticed.”
Social media was overflowing with a fan after their front row moment tweet“Anne Hathaway references the devil wears Prada (17 years ago) while sitting next to Anna Wintour at fashion week…how she has a tight grip on me.”
“omg same but modified in a really cute and interesting way! I live” wrote another, while the Amazon Prime Video account even weighed in, tweet“Anne Hathaway recreating her Devil Wears Prada look for NY Fashion Week is all I want to talk about today.”
In the film, Hathaway plays a fish-on-water assistant in a Vogue-like magazine, but in real life, her style is anything but basic. Whether she’s making her debut at the Cannes Film Festival in a sparkling dress or donning a colorful corset in New York, the WeCrashed star always makes a style statement.
While she didn’t intend to match her character, we’d like to think the fashion gods (or devils) helped make this moment a reality.
