In case you didn’t know, this month marks the 20th anniversary of the Battlefield franchise (September 10th, to be precise). It’s no small thing that a franchise is still alive after two decades, and after EA confirmed that we’ll be seeing more Battlefield in the future, here at MP1st we’ve decided to wrap up every Battlefield game released!
Below are the dates these titles were released, along with the developer and a brief description of the game itself. Note that mods and expansions are not included in the list; only the most important entries.
20 Years of Battlefield – All Battlefield Games Released:
Battlefield 1942 (2002)
Developer: DICE
The first part of the Battlefield series and was developed by DICE. It was released for PC in 2002 and later won AIAS and IGN Game of the Year. To celebrate the game’s tenth anniversary, it was made available for free on Origin in November 2012.
Battlefield: Vietnam (2004)
Developer: DICE Canada
Battlefield Vietnam (aka BFV) is the second installment in the Battlefield series and was developed by the now defunct DICE Canada and published by Electronic Arts. BF: Vietnam was released for PC back in 2004.
The game was re-released on March 15, 2005 as Battlefield Vietnam: Redux. It included current patches for the game, as well as the new weapons, vehicles, and maps included in the patches. It also came with the official World War II mod.

Battlefield 2 (2004)
Developer: DICE
The third part of the Battlefield series and was developed by DICE. It was released in North America on June 21, 2005. The game’s console port, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, was released on October 24, 2005.
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (2005)
Developer: DICE
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (aka BF2:MC) is the fourth installment in the Battlefield series and was developed by DICE and published by EA. It’s a console spin-off of the critically acclaimed Battlefield 2 for PC.
Battlefield 2142 (2006)
Developer: DICE
The fifth installment in the Battlefield series was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts.
Official servers were shut down on June 30, 2014 during Glu Mobile’s mass shutdown of GameSpy servers that day. The game is still playable online through the Gameranger service and the community-run Reclamation project.
Battlefield: Bad Company (2008)
Developer: DICE
Battlefield: Bad Company (also known as Bad Company 1, BFBC or BC1) is the sixth installment in the Battlefield series and was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. The game was highly anticipated, mostly because it added realistic destruction to the game using the new Frostbite engine. A sequel, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, was released in 2010.
Battlefield Heroes (2009)
Developers: DICE, Easy Studios
Battlefield Heroes (aka BFH) is the seventh installment in the Battlefield series and was developed by both DICE and Easy Studios. It’s the first game to be released on EA’s new “Play4Free” service, although players can spend money to buy weapons and customizations. It is designed to run on all types of computers so players with below average computers can enjoy the game.
It was announced that no new accounts can be created for the game after April 15, 2015[1]and all servers were shut down on July 14, 2015.[2] The game is currently playable online via the community-run Phoenix Network and Rising Hub
Battlefield 1943 (2009)
Developer: DICE
The eighth installment in the Battlefield series was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. On August 31, 2010, it was announced that Battlefield 1943 would be bundled with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Ultimate Edition.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (2010)
Developer: DICE
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (also known as Bad Company 2, BFBC2 or BC2) is the tenth installment in the Battlefield series and was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. It is the sequel to Battlefield: Bad Company and received critical acclaim, many praising DICE’s work on the destructible environments and its robust multiplayer component.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 iOS (2010)
Part of the Battlefield series, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 iOS is a mobile port of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. The game borrows many elements from the console port while offering similar gameplay. It was released for iOS on December 16, 2010. It was also released for Android and Kindle Fire.
The game has since been removed from the iOS App Store and is no longer available for purchase. Despite this, the game is still available for the Kindle Fire.
Battlefield Online (2010)
Developer: Neowiz
Battlefield Online (Korean: 배틀필드 온라인) (aka BFO) is the ninth installment in the Battlefield series and is published and developed by Neowiz with contributions from DICE and Electronic Arts. The open beta became available on March 25, 2010. According to the official website, support for the game ended on May 21, 2013 and the servers were shut down.
Battlefield Play4Free (2011)
Developers: DICE, Easy Studios
Battlefield Play4Free (aka BFP4F) is the eleventh installment in the Battlefield series and was developed by DICE and Easy Studios for free play.[1] It uses the Refractor 2 engine used in earlier parts of the series and supports 32 players online.
Battlefield Veterans were granted four-day early access to the open beta on March 31, 2011.[2] Facebook and Twitter fans got early access on April 2nd.[3]
It was announced that as of April 15, 2015, no new accounts will be created for the game[4]and all servers were shut down on July 14, 2015.[5] The game is currently playable online via the community-run Phoenix Network.
Battlefield 3 (2011)
The twelfth installment in the Battlefield series and was developed by DICE. It is the sequel to Battlefield 2 and was released on October 25, 2011 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Battlefield 4 (2013)
The thirteenth installment in the Battlefield series, developed by DICE and published by EA. It is the sequel to Battlefield 3 and was released on October 29, 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. It is the first game in the franchise to also be released on eighth generation consoles, being released for PlayStation 4 on November 12, 2013 and the Xbox One on November 19 of the same year. Battlefield 4 is also available to EA Access members on Xbox One as one of the service’s launch titles for unlimited play.
Battlefield Hardline (2015)
Battlefield Hardline (abbreviated as BFHL) is the fourteenth installment in the Battlefield series developed by Visceral Games in partnership with DICE and published by EA. Battlefield Hardline is unique in that it revolves around the police and focuses on the ongoing war on crime, rather than the military conflicts depicted in all previous Battlefield installments.
Battlefield 1 (2017)
Developer: DICE
The game takes place during the First World War. It is the first part exclusively for eighth generation consoles and was released worldwide on October 21, 2016.
Battlefield V (2018)
Developer: DICE
Battlefield V, also known as Battlefield 5, BFV or BF5 (development codename “Casablanca”), is the sixteenth installment in the Battlefield series developed by DICE and published by EA. The game brings the series back to its origins and is set during World War II. The game’s open beta launched on September 4, 2018 for EA Access and Origin Access members and is available worldwide from September 6, 2018 to September 11, 2018.[1] The game was released on November 9, 2018 for EA Access and Origin Access members and November 15, 2018 for Early Enlister Deluxe Edition owners. It was released worldwide on November 20, 2018.[2]

Battlefield 2042 (2021)
The game was revealed on June 9, 2021. The game was released on November 12, 2021 for EA Play members and those who purchased the Gold and Ultimate Editions. It was released worldwide on November 19, 2021.
