Here's what's happening with the backlash surrounding 'Queer Eye' stars Jonathan Van Ness and Antoni Porowski's new collaboration

For context, both Antoni and JVN started posting on social media earlier this week about becoming ‘partners’ – with Antoni writing: ‘Some personal news ❤️ after years of joking about it we are finally together . Here’s to giving things a chance : ) More tomorrow.”

“We are finally together ❤️ Details tomorrow but do you know we are very happy and feel supported by the people around us 🏳️‍🌈,” JVN added on her Instagram.

Even the joint prankster account for JVN and Antoni wrote: “And to think it all started as a joke. Happy to report that we are finally together as partners – for real this time 🙂 More tomorrow.”

While there were some raised eyebrows over whether the partnership was as romantic as hinted, all speculation was confirmed when JVN and Antoni released the uncropped versions of the images – they turned out to be promotional images for their new pet formula company. yummers

After the jump, JVN added in the comments, “Hope you’re not too heartbroken, we were clever little Bebes to announce this baby we’ve been working on for years!”

@antoni @jvn @Yummerspets Who knew queer baiting was such a good marketing ploy! It’s important to remember that rainbow capitalism isn’t just for brands and straight people.

And others, with genuine annoyance:

@antoni @jvn @Yummerspets I’m pretty pissed about it. You pushed a lot of people around who were very genuinely happy for you and wished you well.

When the negative replies poured in, they responded to a now-deleted comment by saying: “[We] wanted to create a fun, sparkling buzz around it. I’m happily married and thought most people would get the joke.”

They further tweeted: “Seeing Folx angry because two queer people make a joke to start a business are the same critics who have nothing to say on queer issues that affect queer people. Don’t say trans bills, the fall of Dobbs, the threat to marriage equality…but yeah, be animal food crazy.”

Which led to further discussion:

@jvn This news here is worse than that horrible stereotypical joke you used to make headlines to promote your business so you can make money. But sure, throw in trans bills here to make you look altruistic

Twitter: @nikostratis

@jvn du 2, getting richer from a branding deal doesn’t impact those bills or the lives of the queer folks they actually impact, and neither do you, ya’s queening politician, so don’t try to make virtue marks , as if adding to the world other than sponsored content

Twitter: @beaniedebussy

@jvn It’s not that profound, the joke wasn’t funny and queer people are just a tougher audience than the cishet target moms your usual antics are meant for. What is in order? Get your money, but don’t whine when we go wrong.
