Jameela Jamil is calling out the Met Gala after it was revealed that next year’s gala theme will celebrate the legacy of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Over the weekend, the actress took to Instagram to slam the 2023 Met Gala theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” citing some of the controversies Lagerfeld has faced throughout his career and describing the former creative director of Chanel also as “hateful”. and “bigotic”.
Lagerfeld – who died in 2019 at the age of 85 – has been criticized for several of his controversial comments and beliefs, including those related to the #MeToo movement, sexual assault, migrants and LGBTQ rights. He was also accused of Islamaphobia and especially fat phobia.

In her post, Jamil shared a slideshow of “receipts,” which consisted of screenshots of messages and articles discussing a variety of comments made by Lagerfield that were deemed problematic.
For the first slide, however, the The Good Place actress simply wrote the word “Nope” over a photo of Lagerfield.
“Karl Lagerfeld is the theme for next year’s entire Met Gala,” Jamil began in her lengthy caption. “This man… was exceedingly talented indeed, but he used his platform so downright hatefully, mostly towards women, so repeatedly and into the last years of his life, with no remorse, no offer of atonement, no apology, no help for Groups he attacked… there was no explanation for his horrific outbursts.”
She continued: “These groups were women being sexually assaulted, the whole Me Too movement, gay couples wanting to adopt, all fat people, especially fat women, and some of its biggest harms have been targeting Muslim refugees and theirs disgusting kind talked about people fleeing their homes in fear for their lives.
“Why is THIS who we’re celebrating when there are so many AMAZING designers out there who aren’t bigoted white males? “You can’t stand for justice in these areas and then join the celebration of someone celebrating their own public contempt for marginalized people.”

The She-Hulk star ended her post by saying, “Sorry but no. These aren’t ’90s clothes for people’s skinny darlings…come on.”
Jamil has openly criticized Lagerfeld in the past.
According to PEOPLE, the activist took to Twitter after the German designer’s death in 2019. The theme of the 2023 Met Gala was unveiled on Friday. The theme, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, coincides with a major new exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which also features the fashion mogul’s most iconic and revolutionary designs.
