We witnessed a torrential and exciting downpour of automotive design at Yanko Design in September 2022. Each automobile was innovative and brought us something we had never seen or experienced before. From blistering speed to dashing looks to impenetrable safety standards, every automobile we’ve featured at YD has broken some design barriers for us, and hopefully they’ve done the same for you. So we’ve curated a collection of automotive designs that we think are the best of them all! From a modernized Ford buggy to an Apple supercar concept, each of these drool-worthy cars are mercilessly pushing the boundaries of the automotive industry! Automotive enthusiasts will be itching to get their hands on them and spin them on the road!
1. The Fordzilla hypervan
Dubbed the Fordzilla Hypervan, this dune buggy is inspired by the reptiles overall. The matte black color it’s cloaked in is a telltale sign of the Godzilla design influence. If you see this typical Batmobile influence, you are not alone! The appearance of matt orange tones on the outside and inside underlines the sharp character of the ride. The battery on the back hints at its rear-wheel-drive origins, and therefore better balance and handling. The Hypervan gets all the glass doors that have gull wings and look absolutely gorgeous. These doors are an extension of the windshield and the panoramic glass roof, giving the four-wheeler a feeling of airiness.
2. Citroën La 2 Deuche concept
Often referred to as the umbrella on wheels, the iconic 1945 Citroën 2CV had a convertible body with a fixed profile and a retractable sunroof. To revive the nostalgic memories of this economical family car, designer Jean Louis Bui has penned an electric concept in a modern avatar. Named Citroën La 2 Deuche Concept, this cheeky mini car has a sense of airiness. The vehicle’s retro DNA is visible in the section above the wheels, the headlights and the accordion-like retracting roof that transforms it into a convertible.
3. The 2024 Ford Mustang
The 2024 Ford Mustang is here with a toned, muscular look (the four-wheeler apparently worked out) and a tech-infused interior. The body is now more angular and loses some contours, confirming its attractiveness for the new generation. Of course, the 2024 Mustang retains the attractive proportions of its predecessors, and that’s a huge relief. The front end is inspired by the original Mustang with a squarer aesthetic. In contrast to this are the headlights with tri-bar LED elements and the now even more distinctive three-bar rear lights. The rear overhang is now shorter and the hips are slightly wider for that sex appeal.
4. The Arrival ANT
Meet the Arrival ANT, a modern electric vehicle that is a people carrier one day and transforms into a heavy-duty carrier with a visible difference in size the next. This freedom is made possible by the connectable modules that can be connected to the electric vehicle if required. Primarily intended for London’s sophisticated but chaotic urban scene, the concept is designed to be ultra-adaptable to take on the high streets to haul a heavy load, as well as the tight where an elegant means of transport is desired. Designers looked beyond the mere needs of commuting and also focused on the utility aspect of vehicles.
5. HIPECAR
Dubbed the HIPECAR, this stealth supercar comes with the promise of High Performance Carbon Reduction (hence the naming convention) without sacrificing agility and lightweight characteristics too much. The sports car is currently in the prototype stage and the first production version will appear in a few years. Featuring an aluminum monocoque and carbon fiber body panels, the supercar will feature a 62-kilowatt-hour Cosworth battery capable of powering the beast for a range of 150 miles. The option to exceed this figure comes in the form of a Cosworth turbine range extender with a capacity of 35 kW.
6. The Model-Z
Meet the Model-Z electric bike, designed for motorcycle lovers who crave a unique lifestyle of urban commuting without compromising on the riding experience. The vehicle is lightweight for easy maneuvering in crowded urban landscapes. The designer focuses on the distinctive visual element, inspired by the likes of BMW, known for their “kidney grille” design, or Tesla’s iconic front-end look, which represents speed and futuristic DNA.
7. The Apple iCar
Meet the Apple iCar, a conceptual automobile created by Ukraine-based Echo Studio. Developed as an entry for the Motion Design Contest, the concept explores what it would be like for Apple to launch a high-end electric supercar that stands out even from other EV stars like Tesla and Polestar. The vehicle has quite a luxurious, supercar-inspired appeal. I see a bit of the Audi R8 and the lesser-known Lamborghini Asterion in the iCar. The vehicle has an aggressive, fast silhouette, a rounded rear end, and some beautifully designed headlights and taillights. There’s obviously an Apple logo on the front, but each wheel also has some stunningly beautiful rims with Apple logos on them.
8. 3 Wheel BMW R100 Custom Build
This custom BMW build designed by Cumpert Contraptions is just that – a weird contraption that turns heads with its retro punk demeanor. This whimsical beauty, which rests on three wheels instead of the usual two, was once a 1992 BMW R100R Mystic that Tim Campert got his hands on for his mad scientist project. He sawed off the front, replaced it with a chassis from an ATV, and expanded his vision with this frame. “The trike was inspired by pre-war racing cars, which I’m a big fan of,” he told Bike EXIF. “When I started this project in 2012, Morgan had just released their new 3 wheeler. But the main driver for this project was that I wanted to try my hand at aluminum sheet fabrication.”
9. Volvo XC Concept
The boxy nature of the Volvo XC concept seems like a hat tip to the Swedish company’s humble design beginnings, although this modern, minimalist appearance feels a lot like the Polestar ethos has been brought to the table too. However, the result is an SUV that looks fantastic. The clean design doesn’t look boring, and there are enough subtle details to guide the eye and draw people in. Truly a master class in Scandinavian automotive design and a lesson for all automotive brands to consider.
10. Delorean Omega 2040
This Baja-style concept is far from real by 2022 standards, but we’re talking 2040. The electric vehicle will be tailor-made for off-road trails, perhaps for a radically altered topography due to climate change and human-induced drought. DeLorean himself refers to this design as something that represents a complete detour from traditional automotive design. The independent wheel suspension on all four wheels gives an unequivocal indication of its high-performance quotient. Coming from DeLorean, it’s not surprising since they’re used to building futuristic rides.
