It was something we talked about for seven months. It was one of the first things I really wanted to talk about. We were incredibly lucky to have Episode 4 directed by Clare Kilner, who I think is one of the greatest television directors working today. The most important thing for me was that it didn’t feel like another unnecessary, sweaty sex scene because it just isn’t. Anyone who has ever had sex will tell you that sex is not so pretty. It’s not a quaint, amazing thing. It’s uncomfortable, especially when you’re young. There’s an uncomfortableness to sit in, and there’s a discovery and understanding of each other’s bodies—not to mention the practical side of it all.
The depiction of Ser Criston and Rhaenyras house of the dragon The sex scene served the show both visually and narratively, as it was not only presented in a way that helped portray both characters’ youth, but also avoided gratuitousness following Frankel’s contribution. The sex sene has also led to major developments in house of the dragon final episode, specifically Ser Criston’s confession of the affair to Queen Alicent Hightower, who wears green to Rhaenyra’s and Laenor Velaryon’s pre-wedding feast as a symbol of war. Tensions also exploded during the feast when Ser Criston killed Laenor’s lover, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth, in the middle of the crowded room.
Fabien Frankel’s devotion to Ser Criston and Rhaenyras house of the dragon Episode 4’s sex scene proved to be of paramount importance to the show. If it hadn’t been shown as it was, the impact of what happened as a result might not have been as strong. The importance of the affair between Ser Criston and Rhaenyra also shows how house of the dragon uses sex scenes to enhance the story being told, rather than showing it for the sake of nudity. The longstanding implications behind Ser Criston and Rhaenyra’s sex scene are sure to have an impact house of the dragon as the show approaches a major time warp for the second half.
