“Well, I don’t know if I would have to do it all over again if I did. But I did it.”
Jane Fonda explains why it’s so important for her to be open about her age and aging in general. As she nears her 85th birthday, she wants “young people to stop being afraid of getting old.”
The ‘Grace and Frankie’ star spoke to Vogue about her new partnership with H&M Move, a new ‘movewear’ brand which she says is a much better approach than activewear or sportswear or even the workout clothes they’re wearing in the made famous in the 1980s with their exercise videos.

I like their movewear versus sportswear philosophy because it’s not about sport or athletics,” explained Fonda. “It’s about moving in a way that keeps the body healthy and strong.”
She owes her youthful energy and overall fitness to continuing to work to keep her body strong and limber. But it’s not excessive workouts that she used to be known for, it’s things as simple as walking every day.
“Every day when I get out of a car, I thank the goddesses that I have strong thighs, that I’ve trained to keep strong thighs,” she explained. “If I’m reversing a car and have to look over my shoulder, I’m grateful that I’ve stayed flexible and can turn my head and it doesn’t hurt.”
“Just those basic things that you take for granted when you’re younger but can’t do when you’re older unless you’ve stayed strong and flexible,” she continued.

But that’s not to say people should be scared of getting older, as Fonda believes so many young people are. “What matters is not the age, not this chronological number,” she said. “What matters is your health.”
Fonda explained that people are always surprised when they find out how old she is, but that’s why it’s important for her to be honest. At the same time, she admits that in many ways she is speaking from a privileged place.
Even as she spoke about the importance of not giving up on life or fun and showing off her age with pride, Fonda said she also recalls, “Yes, Fonda. You have money. You can afford a trainer. You can afford cosmetic surgery. You can afford facials. You can afford the things that will help you keep looking young.”
Speaking openly about her own decision to have a facelift, she said: “I’m not proud that I had it [one]She talked about “a lot of wealthy women who’ve had all kinds of facelifts and things like that and they look horrible.” She said she “quit because I don’t want to look distorted.”

She also said she wasn’t sure she would if she could travel back in time. “But I did it. I’ll admit it, and then I’ll just say, okay, you can get addicted. Don’t keep doing it.”
In fact, Fonda said that despite having a facelift, she’s gone so far the other way that she doesn’t even have many facials. “I don’t spend a lot of money on face creams or anything like that, but I stay hydrated, I sleep, I move, I stay out of the sun, and I have good friends who make me laugh,” she said. “Laughter is good too.”
In her partnership with H&M Movie, Fonda is fully focused on “making the whole world move”. It’s something she’s embraced for years and served her well as a philosophy well into her mid-80s.
“It just seems to make sense to me because I’m almost 85,” she said. “I know better than I did when I was younger that no matter how old you are or who you are or where you are, exercising in ways that are appropriate to your age is absolutely critical to your healthy lifespan.”
