ANAHEIM — Troy Terry scored 55 seconds into overtime to give the Anaheim Ducks a 5-4 win over the Seattle Kraken in Wednesday’s season opener for both teams at the Honda Center.

Terry had two goals and one assist, Ryan Strome had a goal and two assists on his debut John Gibson made 44 saves and had the assist for the winning goal for the Ducks, who were 4-2 down in the third period.

“[Gibson] makes a big save on a breakaway and then takes me the other way for a breakaway,” Terry said. “The guy does everything. He is our backbone. … Just to get back in front of those fans on opening night was contagious for us. You see the resilience and how tight this group is and we can build on that.”

Matty Beniers had a goal and an assist, Jared McCann, Andre Burakowski and Oliver Bjorkstrand each scored a power play goal, and Phillip Grubauer made 22 saves for Seattle, who went 3-on-5 man-advantage and play with the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

Forward Shane Wrightthe No. 4 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, played 6-14 in his NHL debut for the Kraken.

“We took a point but we liked our position, especially the 4-2 lead with the ability to deny the win,” said Seattle coach Dave Hakstol. “We have to do a few things better. Small things make a big difference.”

Trevor Zegras scored the second power play goal of the game for the Ducks with a one-timer from the left faceoff circle for a 4-4 tie after 13:23 of the third.

“I thought we turned the tables in the third period,” Strome said. “We got pucks behind hers [defense], we played more in their zone, and some guys made games. When we kept the game simple for us, it was almost a two-volume story.”

The Kraken went on their fifth power play with 4:23 left and had scoring chances, but Gibson made four saves and defenders Nathan Beaulieu blocked u Jordan Eberle Shot headed for an open net.

“It’s the fourth [power-play goal] that we wanted, we had the empty net,” Hakstol said. “We played well and had a chance to put the game winner there.”

Anaheim scored with his first shot of the game. Mason McTavish centered Terry in the backhand slot and lifted the puck over Grubauer’s glove for a 1-0 lead after 51 seconds of the first period.

Seattle had a 5-on-3 power play in the first 37 seconds, and McCann scored on the second penalty after a cross-ice pass from Beniers to tie it 1-1 at 10-13.

The Kraken passed the Ducks 14-4 in the first 12-22 and 20-10 in the first.

After Anaheim defender Cam Fowler sent the puck over the glass for a 1:00 game delay in the first period, Burakovsky scoring 38 seconds into the second period to give the Kraken a 2-1 lead.

Bjorkstrand scored his third power play goal to make it 3-1 at 6:28, but Strome made it 2-1 with McTavish on a power play to break it to 3-2 (18:24).

Anaheim went 2-on-3 with man advantage.

“Some great pieces by [McTavish]”said Strome. “When you play with guys who have that level of skill and confidence, they’re going to be able to make those plays with time and space.”

Beniers rebounded from a blocked shot to extend Seattle’s lead to 4-2 at 4:09 of the third.

“They had a good push and we just have to figure out how to finish these games,” said Beniers. “We played really well and only in the last 10-12 minutes they had a good push and we didn’t have the best response.”

Frank Vatrano cut it down to 4-3 with a wrist shot from the inside edge of the right circle at 9:56.

“That’s why we got him,” Terry said of Vatrano, who signed with the Ducks after parting ways with the New York Rangers and Florida Panthers last season. “He can shoot a hockey puck.”

REMARKS: The Kraken, who were 29th in the NHL on power play with 14.6 percent last season, scored three power play goals for the first time in their history. … The Ducks have won five home games in a row. … Strome (five-year deal July 13), Vatrano (three-year deal July 13) and John Klingerberg (One-year contract July 29) for two goals and four assists. … Anaheim forward Paul Regenda had a shot in 10:16 on his NHL debut. … Zegras played his 100th NHL game. … Burakovsky (five-year deal on July 13), Bjorkstrand (trade with Columbus Blue Jackets on July 22) and Justin Schulz (Two-year contract on July 13) combined for two goals and two assists for Seattle.
