Apple today released the first beta of an upcoming iOS 16.1 update to public beta testers, opening the beta testing process to the general public. Today’s beta comes a day after Apple made the beta available to developers.

Public beta testers who have signed up for Apple’s free beta testing program can download the “iOS 16.1” beta over the air after installing the appropriate certificate from the public beta website.

Apple says iOS 16.1 will introduce Live Activity, an interactive notification feature that lets you keep tabs on what’s happening in real time. Live activities will be available on the lock screen and dynamic island, but you won’t see them in beta as developers are still working on implementing support.

The update includes a Clean Energy Charging feature in the US that causes the iPhone to charge selectively at times when electricity with lower carbon emissions is available and lays the foundation for Matter, a smart home standard that Apple wants to support from this fall.

Other new features include a purgeable wallet app, UI changes to customize the lock screen, and more. See our iOS 16.1 feature guide for details. Apple has also released a new iPadOS 16.1 public beta.
