When facing an enemy who can turn his friends and family into demons by simply turning a key and can turn into anyone with the identity key, people have to be very smart to win. So the Locke kids and their friends had to grow up fast when they moved into the Keyhouse. When it came to survival for the brightest, the Locke siblings won the battle, but the same cannot be said for all of the characters on the show.
They all underestimated the threat Dodge initially posed, but after Sam escaped from prison and attacked the family, everyone became vigilant. lock and key had to squeeze the rapid progression of the characters into just three seasons, forcing each protagonist to advance quickly and keep up with the villains.
11 Eden
Eden had terrible judgment even before she was possessed by the demon. Ownership didn’t change her either as she was used by Dodge and ended up thrown in the well by Gideon. She was just enjoying the attention of the other kids at school and didn’t seem to get it when Kinsey used the Music Box key on her either.
She even took the picture of Ellie unconscious when Tyler and Kinsey called the group to dispose of the body when they thought they killed Dodge. However, she managed to get Josh to follow her to the caves, which was probably the smartest move she’s ever made.
10 Gideon
Captain Fredrick Gideon was a cold-hearted killer in 1775, but he never reformed, even after being trapped in the well. He managed to outsmart Eden and shove her into the well, but that was all his intelligence was up to. He was unable to use his knowledge of the Keys and his strength as the god of demons to defeat Dodge and the Lockes.
He was actually trying to merge the human and demon worlds which would have made it impossible for either side to survive as it would have caused a paradox. He underestimated the Lockes and was shoved back into his portal by Nina.
9 ellie
Ellie was one of the unhappiest characters on the show, as most of her efforts were undermined by her own compassion for people. She could never let go of Lucas and also overlooked the fact that he was still obsessed with Dodge and ended up harboring the show’s most dangerous demon.
Ellie also failed to bond with the Locke children early enough, even giving Dodge the Crown of Shadows so she could raise an army. In the end, Dodge tricked her and had her locked behind the Black Door. She was lucky to have the Locke kids around when they rescued her with the identity key.
8th Nina
Nina could have made a better mother if she had chosen to listen to her children from the start. She didn’t remember magic, but she should have at least noticed the stress Duncan, Erin, and the kids were under during seasons one and two.
She even lost herself and started drinking again, which was one of the worst decisions she’d ever made, especially as a single mom. She finally managed to save the day by pushing the dying Gideon into the portal. She also found out that Dodge was inside Bode’s body, which helped save the little man.
7 Duncan
If the show had started 23 years earlier, when Dunc was the Key Master for Rendell, Erin, and the rest of the ancient Keepers of the Keys, his contribution would have been better appreciated. With no memory of magic and struggles with a lost past, Dunc made a boring character in the first season.
Regaining his memories and realizing the danger Dodge posed to the family, he became a father figure to Tyler and Bode and faced the threat. He helped the kids defeat the demon army and also helped them find the Alpha key which ended up making the difference.
6 Scotsman
If Kinsey had understood Scot’s feelings for her sooner than she did, she would have avoided most of the troubles that gift has caused the family. Scot was always a gentleman, willing to follow his passion and give Kinsey the time and space she needed.
Scot also decided to stay longer to help the Lockes defeat Dodge, which put his life in danger because he genuinely loved Kinsey. He should have worked harder to help Kinsey see the truth about Gabe and saved her from the suffering she ended up going through.
5 erin
Of all the adults who had dealt with the keys in the past, Erin was the most helpful to the Locke siblings, at least before Dodge killed her. She understood Duncan’s loss after realizing he couldn’t remember most of his childhood, thus helping to regain his memories which ended up saving everyone.
However, the decision to use the head key while a housekeeper was in the house 23 years ago was a huge mistake as she was trapped in her own head all these years. After all, Erin’s biggest mistake was looking for an evasive maneuver on her own. She should have learned her lesson after that attempt went awry when they were younger.
4 Gift/Dodge
Although Gideon was a stronger villain than Dodge, he wasn’t nearly as intelligent. Dodge found a way to stay in the human world for so long without getting destroyed himself. She also seemed to have endless ideas on how to dress up.
From using Lucas’ body to take advantage of Ellie to taking Gabe’s body to become Kinsey’s friend, Dodge has always been one step ahead of the Lockes. However, she underestimated the Lockes’ abilities and also became overly greedy when she decided to make a demon out of everyone.
3 floor
Young and intelligent are the two words that sum up Bode’s character. He was the first to discover the Magic Keys and didn’t hesitate to try each key, using himself as a sample. The little boy made many mistakes handling Dodge, but he also exercised a great deal of caution considering his young age.
Bode and Rufus found out that Ellie had been thrown into the caves after Dodge used the identity key on her. Bode also helped Nina understand magic, making her a member of the team in the fight against Dodge and Gideon.
2 Kinsey
Kinsey was the boldest of the Locke siblings, but not the smartest, having dated Dodge the entire time. Kinsey also initially failed to notice Scot’s feelings for her and treated him poorly, allowing Dodge to take advantage of both. Kinsey was still a brave girl who knew when to attack and when to strategize.
Her sharp thinking helped the group defeat Dodge and save Bode after his body became possessed by Dodge. Kinsey also understood the need to trust Dodge for a while when Gideon emerged as a greater threat, and that helped them put up a better resistance against the god of demons than against Dodge.
1 Tyler
Tyler’s poor judgment sometimes overwhelmed him, but he’s the only character who can be counted on to make the right decision in the most difficult of situations. Tyler understood that everyone needed to exercise caution when handling the keys and cautioned Bode and Kinsey against using them for fun.
Tyler was also involved in every success of the Lockes, including destroying the Shadows and assisting the team in disposing of what they believed to be Dodge’s body. It was Tyler who always stood up to protect the family and always tried to protect everyone, including Jackie. He figured out how to get the save key and restore Dunc’s memory, made the most of the alpha key, and eventually destroyed both Dodge and Gideon.
