How was the moon formed? A supercomputer may have just found the answer

The simulation shows the moon forming from the shattered remains of Theia and parts of Earth

The moon may have formed in the immediate aftermath of a cataclysmic impact that ripped off a chunk of Earth and threw it into space, a new study has suggested.

Since the mid-1970s, astronomers have believed that the moon could have been made by a collision between Earth and an old one Mars-large protoplanet called Theia; The colossal impact would have created a vast debris field from which our lunar companion slowly formed over thousands of years.
