Chad Kroeger, frontman of Canadian rock band Nickelback, has revealed that everyone has mispronounced their last name over the years.
Speaking to Loudwire on a recent podcast, Kroeger explained that his last name is often butchered; People have said Kroh-ger, like the US grocery chain.
However, the Hanna, Alta-born musician insists it should be pronounced the same way as Freddy Krueger, the Terrible Nightmare on Elm Street serial killer.
“It’s Kroo-ger, don’t trust the internet,” the musician said.
He says he’s been slow to correct people because he doesn’t want to come off wrong.
“If I just stop and say, ‘Actually, it’s Kroeger,’ I look like such an idiot. So I’m just like whatever, I don’t care.”
He told the podcast that there are a few people who have gone out of their way to make sure they’re getting it right, including Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell, who once corrected a journalist during a joint interview in 2004.
“I kind of looked at Jerry and he said, ‘That’s your name, dude. That’s your last name.’”

He continued: “Tell that guy over there how to say it right so he stops saying it wrong into that mic and misinforming people.
“That’s your last name, bro.” And I was like, ‘Wow, you really care about that shit!'”

Kroeger also stated that there is one band he never wants to follow again, recounting that Atlanta-based band Sevendust has performed for Nickelback on a number of occasions.
