If you’re like us, you’ve already watched Hocus pocus 2 several times – the long-awaited sequel is an instant classic and a perfect Halloween flick for fans of the original and newcomers alike.
Of course, if you’re a big fan of mumbo-jumbo, you’ve surely noticed a number of adorable callbacks, easter eggs, and more nods to the original film. Here’s everything we discovered in one place for your nostalgic enjoyment:
1.
For starters, the opening sequences of both films are very similar – both showing a wide view of Salem as something (or someone) flies across the screen.
2.
This is more of a fun detail than an Easter egg, but the actors who played Young Winnie (Taylor Henderson), Mary (Nina Kitchen) and Sarah (Juju Journey Brener) absolutely nailed it, and we MUST check out their side – on the side of their older colleagues.
3.
Also, we finally got to see what dear, sweet Billy Butcherson looked like in his living form.
4.
It turns out that Mother Witch (Hannah Waddington) is the origin of the Sanderson sisters’ whole “eating children’s souls for eternal youth and beauty” cause. You can hear her singing “Come, Little Children” at the beginning of the film when the Sandersons first meet her.
5.
Even now that we’ve seen Mother Witch Hocus pocus 2if you go back to the original film, it looks like Dani’s witch costume resembles the witch mother.
6.
Another important part of this opening encounter? We’re back at Book! (Or should we say “BOOOOOOOK!”) You know, THE spell book that belongs to Winnie and the Sanderson sisters. Of course, he will be a crucial part of the entire sequel.
7.
When young Winifred first opens the book, she reads “Cat Transfiguration Spell,” the spell she ultimately uses at the beginning of Thackery Binx mumbo-jumbo.
8th.
If you look closely, Becca, Izzy, and Cassie wear colors that mirror the Sanderson sisters’ color scheme when they introduce themselves.
9.
In present-day Salem, the Sanderson Witch Museum (formerly just her home) has reopened as Gilbert’s (Sam Richardson) Olde Salem Magic Shop.
10
Gilbert tells a crowd at the store that on Halloween 29 years ago, some swear they saw the Sanderson sisters. Of course, 1993 was 29 years ago and he’s referring to the original storyline of mumbo-jumbo.
11.
Gilbert’s telling of the story of the Sanderson sisters is also very similar to the beginning mumbo-jumboas well as Max and Alison’s teacher telling their story.
12.
There is a hilarious moment when a young child asks Gilbert, “What is a virgin?” Whitney Peak (Becca) told EW that the child’s mother is actually an actress Hocus pocus 2 Writer Jen D’Angelo in a cameo appearance.
13.
In fact, it turns out that Gilbert himself was present the night it all went down with Max, Alison and Dani in 1993 and saw the Sanderson sisters just before they disappeared at sunrise. If you look closely, you can see the silhouettes of Max, Alison, Dani, and Billy Butcherson in this graveyard scene.
14
Gilbert also references that Halloween 1993 wasn’t a great year for him because “a bunch of bullies stole all his candy” — a reference to Jay and Ice in the original film.
fifteen.
When Becca and Izzy spot Cassie on the billboard around town, you can actually see behind Cassie in the photo what looks like the Dennison family home from the original film.
16
When Becca and Izzy first meet the Sanderson sisters, Mary talks about “the boys that are in cages” and the “fake sunrise” that tricked her. These are obviously callbacks to what happened to Jay and Ice and then to Max, Alison and Dani mumbo-jumbo.
17
When the Sanderson sisters discover Walgreens, they must learn new modes of transportation. Mary hilariously decides to use robot vacuums while Sarah sits on a Swiffer. This is a fun callback to how they used a good old fashioned vacuum and mop from the 1993 era in the first film.
18
When the Sanderson sisters first enter Gilbert’s store, Sarah notices that their rat tails are missing. in the mumbo-jumbothe first thing they found in the hut when they came back was their happy rat tails.
19
Mistaking Gilbert’s cat, Cobweb, for Thackery Binx, Sarah says, “The Binx boy, is he alive?” and Winifred swears it really is Thackery.
20
At one point, Gilbert suggests the Sanderson sisters try a calming circle, which Mary mentioned in the first film.
21
As Winifred reads the spell, Sarah notes that they aren’t allowed in a sacred place, which we learned about mumbo-jumbo when Binx told Max, Alison and Dani to hide in the graveyard.
22
At the town’s carnival, Mayor Traske (Tony Hale) stands in line in front of a couple dressed in devil costumes, robes and curlers. This, of course, is a throwback to Garry and Penny Marshall’s cameo appearance in the first film.
23
In fact, later in the film, we see someone looking at it I agree scene one mumbo-jumbo. Which does ______________ mean mumbo-jumbo THE FILM exists in the Hocus pocus 2 Universe.
24
As in the original film, the Sandersons sing a song to put the townspeople in a trance. Originally it was “I Put A Spell On You” and this time it was “One Way Or Another”. But the “Magic” part of the song used the same lyrics – “Ah say in pi alpha mabi upendi.”
25
When everyone in town falls under the spell of the Sanderson sisters and they dance around town, you see someone dressed as Madonna. This is an allusion to mumbo-jumbo when Dani and Max’s mother also appeared as Madonna on Halloween.
26
The girls rely on a salt circle to keep the Sanderson sisters at bay, which is a nod to the way Alison handled them in the first film.
27
When the Sanderson sisters run into Becca again, Mary cannot remember her name and actually gives Becca the same nickname she gave Dani in the original film.
28
When Mayor Traske’s car pulls into the garage, the Sandersons mistake the headlights for sunrise. This is a nod to the way Max, Alison and Dani tricked them into believing that car headlights were actually sunrise mumbo-jumbo.
29
And when they realize it’s actually a car, Mary says, “Oopsie, my mistake, it’s just a very small bus.” The Sandersons famously learned what a bus is in an iconic scene in the original film.
30
Sarah Sanderson uses her hilarious catchphrase “amok, amok, amok” again as the sisters fly off to try and find Book at her cottage.
31
Finally we get more of Billy Butcherson’s backstory. The original dubs Billy Winifred’s “unfaithful lover” whom she poisoned after he cheated on her with Sarah. However, Billy uses Hocus pocus 2 To get things straight – he says that he and Winnie have only kissed ONCE, a fact that Gilbert will later make clear to everyone.
32
You may have noticed that Hocus pocus 2Mary’s mouth twists into Left instead of To the right. This isn’t actually a continuity error – the reason for the change is that Kathy Najimy literally couldn’t keep her mouth in the same position anymore.
33
In fact, Mary’s mouth tilting in the opposite direction is explained very early in the film when Winifred punches Mary during her opening song and her mouth changes direction.
34
At the end of the film, Becca, Izzy and Cassie walk away in the same manner as the Sanderson sisters.
35
And finally, ICYMI, there’s a post-credits scene that might be MORE teasing mumbo-jumbo goodness to come.
