WB Games Montreal Gotham Knights, which was finally released on October 21st, follows the adventures of Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl and Robin after Batman is killed. This bold move sets in motion an unpredictable conspiracy that ultimately revolves around two secret societies who want Gotham for themselves.
While the game’s mediocre reception and a plethora of performance issues might put you off picking it up, Batman fans might still want to learn about its entertaining history. As such, here’s a summary of what’s going on inside Gotham Knights and how it all comes to a head in its exciting ending.
How does Batman die in Gotham Knights?
Gotham Knights begins by showing you exactly how Batman died. Ra’s Al Ghul ambushes Bruce Wayne in the Batcave, leading to an entertaining brawl in Batman’s legendary base of operations. Batman calls his buddies, but none of them are close enough to help him in time. When it becomes clear that the only way to defeat Ra’s Al Ghul is to blow up the Batcave, Batman does so, killing himself in the process as well.
Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Robin arrive at the scene shortly after and find Bruce’s body. We then see his funeral where Jacob Kane, CEO of Kane Industries and Bruce Wayne’s uncle, gives a speech about how Bruce Wayne served Gotham City well. The former cronies quickly realize they must now defend Gotham City and decide to investigate Batman’s latest case. Her efforts bring her to the crime scene of Dr. Kirk Langstrom, where they learn they must infiltrate the GCPD to get a biometric key from his body.
There they encounter Talia Al Ghul, who cremates Ra’s body and claims that she is no longer in charge of the League of Shadows. From there, the case continues as the crew establishes a base of operations at the Belfry in Gotham City and takes on the likes of Harley Quinn and the Penguin, who is now reformed but knows about Gotham’s secret society.
The mysteries of the Court of Owls in Gotham Knights
Penguin directs the bat family into the Powers Club, an old-money gentleman’s club in Gotham City. There they find an entrance to an underground network of caves and the Court of Owls, a secret society considered an urban legend even by Batman. They are led by The Voice of the Court, who eventually catches the heroes and throws them into a death pit. The heroes escape and receive a key in the process.
With this key, they find information about how the Court of Owls murdered Judge Elena Moreno’s brother while she was trying to stop the construction of the Chelsea Tunnel in Gotham City. The bat family sneaks into this construction site and encounters ferocious, zombified creatures called Talons, which the Court of Owls resurrected with an element called Dionesium. After escaping the tunnel, Talia reveals that Dinoseum has the same properties as the Lazurus Pit, leading to the League of Shadows declaring war on Gotham.
She asks the heroes to turn off the voice of the court to end the conflict, and they obey. Upon further investigation, they learn that Bruce’s uncle, Jacob Kane, is the voice of the court and knows that Bruce was Batman. He escapes the chaos of the League of Shadows and murders many members of the Court of Owls at a masquerade. Penguin then calls and asks for the heroes’ help, but it turns out to be a trick and whoever you play is sedated and taken to the maze of the Court of Owls.
The maze is a massive mechanical stage that, combined with toxic gas, makes the trapped hero hallucinate and wonder if Batman really cared about them. Eventually, the captive hero breaks out of the illusion, but the Court of Owls begins attacking Gotham City more openly. The Bat family decides it’s time to bring Jacob Kane down and work with Renee Montoya and Judge Moreno to get a warrant out for his arrest.
After that there is a long siege of Kane Industries so the heroes can bring Jacob Kane publicity and arrest him for the murders of Kirk Langstrom and more. They eventually arrest him, but just as he is about to be put in a police car, Talia murders him. After a chase, she reveals that she has always been in charge of the League of Shadows and plans a massive attack on Gotham City.
The end of Gotham Knights
After rescuing some of their allies from League of Shadow attacks in Gotham City, the Bat Family tracks Talia to Arkham Asylum. There, they discover that she has combined the Dionesium used by the Court of Owls with a real Lazurus pit in Gotham to create more powerful creatures: Man-Bats. After nearly dying while knocking one out, the heroes battle more Man-Bats terrorizing Gotham City.
Eventually, the heroes discover that the Lazarus Pit is near the now-ruined Batcave and confront Talia there. That’s when her plan becomes clear: she revives Bruce Wayne in the Lazarus Pit and plans to brainwash him into killing and controlling Gotham City with her. Her plan works and Bruce Wayne is revived and becomes loyal to Talia. A boss fight ensues in which the mentees stand their ground against their mentor.
Bruce Wayne eventually comes to his senses and learns of what is going on in Gotham, but is mortally wounded again when a player-intended punch hits Bruce instead. This is the final boss fight against Talia. The Court of Owls even reappear during the fight with a new, unnamed Voice of the Court, and they make it clear that they intend to claim this Lazarus Pit for themselves. Talia turns on to attack some of them and then fights the player again. As the fight falters and it becomes clear she won’t win, Talia teleports away.
The Court of Owls is still there and intends to take advantage of the Lazarus Pit. Bruce realizes this and tells his former sidekick to run while he climbs into the Batwing, still hanging in the Batman’s wreckage. As the player escapes, Batman denounces the Court of Owls and anyone else who uses their wealth or power to control and harm others before crashing the Batwing into the Lazarus Pit. This defeats the Court of Owls and destroys the Lazarus Pit, but at the cost of Batman’s life… once again.
Knowing that Batman is truly dead now, the hero who defeated Talia dons a new suit and vows to protect Gotham City in his own way. Back at the Belfry, the heroes watch video of them interrupting Bruce while he was recording the Code: Black message that was sent to them when he died. After telling him not to worry and coming to dinner with them, Batman ends the recording by saying, “You always look after me,” before the bat family who were watching walk away.
