She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Season Finale Recap
There was a lot of intrigue when She-Hulk: Attorney At Law was announced. After all, Jennifer Walters is the leader of the A-Force, the all-female Avengers team. Well, we might not be in A-Force territory yet (let’s get started, Kevin), but She-Hulk proved that with a sitcom format, some serious swings, and a whole load of cameos and breaking fourth walls is Jens Auster.
The trio of Kat Coiro (executive producer/director), Jessica Gao (executive producer/head writer), and Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk/Jen Walters) aren’t the only reason for the success of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, but they are deserve the lion’s share of the recognition between them. Coiro and Gao knew exactly what they wanted to bring to the table with Jen, and there’s no better person on the planet to play them than Maslany (so please also take this as a thank you to casting directors Sarah Finn and Jason B.Stamey). It’s instantly confident in its irreverent tone and Jen wins our hearts with ease with chronic kinship and by inspiring an unwavering desire to support their success.
A sitcom is the perfect vehicle for someone who just wants to be invisible and do their job, which suddenly becomes a giant, green, indestructible bomb. Through the use of humor, Gao and the creative team were able to highlight some of the most ridiculous parts of everyday life as a woman, while showing the struggles that are imposed by superpowers in a way we hadn’t seen before in the MCU.
The use of the sitcom format only breaks apart in the finale, and the same goes for the fourth wall breaks. Up until this final episode, Jen’s eye contact with the camera and reliance on humor served her well. However, a huge bombshell in the penultimate episode left the show unable to reconcile with its tone. Serious issues can be addressed with humor, as is consistently shown in other 22- to 24-episode seasons. Unfortunately, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law just seems to be running out of time. Any reckoning with the abject humiliation Jen is experiencing is dropped in favor of fast-paced humor and a finale that had too much to accomplish in just 30 minutes.
The She-Hulk: Attorney At Law finale may not be the best episode of the series, but it’s not enough to detract from the show’s overall success. Fans who feared the series would have no value in the overall MCU canon have been proven wrong time and again, not only by the large involvement of characters like Wong (Benedict Wong), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Daredevil (Charlie cox). but with character introductions that have gigantic Implications for the future of the franchise.
“
The value of the show as something entirely new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is also not to be underestimated. While the MCU remains largely genderless, this is the first time we’ve seen female sexuality take center stage in one of its series. In a world where women are still told to “ask for it” in any context, Gao and co. brought us a woman in her 30s looking for healthy sexual relationships and sent Daredevil down the proverbial path of shame , superhero suit and such. Phase 1 could never.
That freshness isn’t solely down to her unabashed approach to Jen’s sex life, either. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law confronts toxic masculinity in a way unseen in this franchise or much mainstream superhero media at large. It’s easy to roll your eyes and say that there are many other genres that are already resonating on the front lines of toxic masculinity, but that’s the point. The sheer volume of men, young and old, religiously watching the MCU cannot be downplayed, and She-Hulk squared his shoulders and yelled from the rooftops that “boys won’t be boys! Boys are held accountable for their actions!” That’s a big deal for a franchise with as much appeal as the MCU, which has previously opted for what they feel is the “most universally accessible.” But being “generally available” has historically been translated as “available to men”. I love a Captain America flick as much as I love the next person, and all kinds of superheroes are for all kinds of people, but it’s exciting to see a wider demographic being reached.
The digital effects have been the elephant in the room since the first She-Hulk: Attorney At Law trailer was released. There are completely unfounded rumors of a massive per-episode budget for She-Hulk, but there are a few things that need to be considered in what I’m about to say. First of all, these numbers are not confirmed by any real source, so they will be treated as a rumor until proven otherwise. But as someone who started out as a critic for the Arrowverse, the effects didn’t bother me that much. Were they flawless? no Do I stand by what I said? my premiere reviewthat Jen looks a little weirder than Hulk because he’s allowed to have blemishes and facial hair? Yes. It looks like a TV show with a massively computer generated character in it. Blaming him for being something other than what it is seems kind of odd to me.
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law was a smash hit. It wobbled a bit on the descent, but it still stuck on landing. We hope to see a lot more of Jennifer Walters in the MCU. Given her relationship with Matt Murdock, Daredevil: Born Again isn’t off the table, and we’ll keep hoping for an A-Force movie until cinemas cease to exist.
