Injuries can dramatically affect the success (or lack thereof) that CFL teams can achieve over the course of the regular season.
Below is the number of “Lost Player Games” each team had over the 14 weeks of promotion this year. Since not every team played the same number of games, these totals per game were averaged.
It should also be noted that sometimes teams have healthy players on the injured list for a game. This practice is permissible because players’ earnings still count towards the salary cap while on the injured list for a game, nullifying any potential competitive advantage.
The figures below do not include players who have been put on the injured list for a game as healthy scratches – only those who are actually injured.
Here’s how all nine CFL teams stack up in terms of injuries so far, with just seven weeks to go in the regular season.
Montreal Alouettes – 69 man games lost (5.8 per game)
The Alouettes were the least injured team in the league this season, although the early loss of two-time CFL All-Star running back William Stanback to a broken ankle was a major blow to the offense. Former All-Star halfback Greg Reid and Tyrell Richards, the 2022 CFL Draft’s first overall pick, are two other notable casualties who have missed a total of 17 games due to knee injuries.
BC Lions – 90 man games lost (8.2 per game)
Despite having relatively few injuries overall, the Lions suffered a devastating injury when MOP leader Nathan Rourke required foot surgery last month. Defensive tackle Steven Richardson has missed all year so far with an injury he picked up in the offseason, while slotback Bryan Burnham and linebacker Bo Lokombo have also missed months-long stints.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers – 122 lost man games (9.4 per game)
A number of key players have missed lengthy stints at Bomberland this year, including receiver Greg Ellingson, offensive lineman Michael Couture, linebacker Kyrie Wilson and defensive back Brandon Alexander. One of the biggest setbacks for the club came when strong linebacker Mercy Maston sustained an Achilles injury in training camp for the second straight year.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats – 117 man games lost (9.8 per game)
The Ticats have lost a number of key Canadian offensive players for extended periods this season, with Chris Van Zeyl, Kyle Saxelid and Alex Fontana ending up on the six-game injury list. The team has also had to deal with injuries at the quarterback position recently, as Dane Evans was restricted with a shoulder injury and Matthew Shiltz was placed on the six-game injury list with a problem with his wrist.
Ottawa Redblacks – 138 man games lost (11.5 per game)
Jeremiah Masoli only played four games before likely suffering a season-ending leg injury when he was hit by defensive tackle Garrett Marino. Award-winning free-agent acquisition Kwaku Boateng was never an option for the team after picking up a season-ending injury early in training camp, while defender Justin Howell has missed seven games due to a combination of ailments.
Calgary Stampeders – 151 man games lost (12.6 per game)
Calgary’s biggest loss of the year came when boundary cornerback Tre Roberson underwent season-ending knee surgery, although the club has also suffered a number of other serious injuries. Among those who also missed time are receiver Jalen Philpot, offensive lineman Sean McEwen, linebacker Jameer Thurman, strong-side linebacker Titus Wall, and defensive back Branden Dozier.
Edmonton Elks – 170 man games lost (13.1 per game)
Edmonton’s roster has been a revolving door all season, in part due to the many injuries they have sustained. Canadian quarterback Tre Ford missed eight games with a shoulder injury, while running back James Wilder Jr., receiver Kenny Lawler, defensive lineman Jake Ceresna, linebacker Tre Watson and defensive back Aaron Grymes also missed a number of games.
Saskatchewan Roughriders – 175 man games lost (13.5 per game)
The riders were hit with stomach flu last weekend despite suffering a slew of injuries throughout the season. Former CFL All-Star center Dan Clark suffered a broken leg in Week 2, while running back Jamal Morrow, wide receiver Shaq Evans, slotback Kyran Moore, defensive tackle Anthony Lanier II, defensive end AC Leonard and linebacker Micah Teitz all made the time missed too.
Toronto Argonauts – 178 man games lost (14.8 per game)
No team has suffered more injuries this season in the CFL than the boatmen, who have been without a number of key players for much of the year. Running back Andrew Harris, receiver Eric Rogers, offensive lineman Peter Nicastro, defensive lineman Ja’Gared Davis and defensive back Shaquille Richardson all missed time, along with offensive tackles Trevon Tate and Isiah Cage.
