League of Legends European Championship (LEC) fans were heartbroken after EU favorites G2 Esports withdrew from Worlds 2022 competition. The team finished third in Group B, tied with Evil Geniuses 1-5 in the group stage, and were eliminated.
In the second half of the group stage, the European team lost all best-of-ones against Evil Geniuses, DWG KIA and JD Gaming.
Rasmus “caPs” Winther from mid lane, who usually smiles for the camera, looked downcast in the latest episode of his short segment “Caps Recaps”. He took the time to thank all his supporters and expressed hope for a better season next year.
In a longer interview with ONE Esports, the G2 mid laner reflects on his Worlds 2022 run, this year’s regular season and his teammates.
G2 caps admit they were “on a downward spiral” coming into Worlds 2022
In their final game of the group stage against JD Gaming, the team made a strong start by defeating four LPL players in five minutes. CaPs blasted off and pulled in a double kill on Lou “Missing” Yun-Feng’s Renata Glasc and Zeng “Yagao” Qi’s Sylas, which appeared to have briefly boosted their jungler Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski’s morale.
The mid laner had his sights set on winning his final game at Worlds 2022 as “a win is a great way to end the year.” However, G2 caps showed that he couldn’t concentrate well during their game against JDG.
“I think for me I was pretty much done,” he admitted. “There were a lot of thoughts screaming in my head.”
Looking back on their 2022 regular season run, G2 caPs said the team struggled with the meta from the LEC Finals through to the World Championships.
“We were in a downward spiral. We did pretty well in the summer but then we had an unlucky final and I think we’ve lost our momentum since then,” he said. “I think the meta has moved and we haven’t really moved [along with it]. We didn’t figure out what we wanted to do. We’re not good enough at predicting the meta, we’re not good enough at finding answers to it.”
G2 debuted their brand new roster for the first time in the first split of the year, defeating Rogue 3-0 to claim the LEC Spring 2022 Championship. The new team was Carlos “Ocelote” Rodriguez’s “Rebuild” roster, which included caPs, Jankos, Victor “Flakked” Lirola Tortosa, Raphaël “Targamas” Crabbé, and Sergen “BrokenBlade” Çelik. The former G2 CEO made a big decision in 2021 to bench and trade half of his players, including Martin “Rekkles” Larsson.
They then represented the European region at the Mid-Season Invitational, where caPs pulled out unconventional picks like Anivia in the international tournament. Despite losing 3-0 to T1 in the semifinals, G2 kept their heads up and used their MSI experience to their advantage in the LEC Summer Split.
They recovered, started the summer season and finally finished on a strong note at the top of the overall standings. Unfortunately, G2 failed to clinch the Summer Championship title after losing 3-0 to Rogue in the finals in Malmo, Sweden. This was the first time CAPS lost an LEC final.
Despite the devastating defeat on the international stage, caPs remains grateful to his team.
“I think no matter how the year ended, it wasn’t an easy task for everyone,” he said.
He is particularly proud of their botlaner Flakked, who has never played in the LEC before.
“He’s coming to G2 now and he’s expected to perform,” he said. “And I think he did, so I’m really happy for my team and excited to see how we can grow going forward.”
