Apple has reportedly scrapped plans to release an inexpensive iPad with a plastic body and keyboard for under $500 Bloombergis Mark Gurman.

In his Power On newsletter, Gurman wrote that Apple had “considered internally to release a plastic-backed ‘iPad’ with a plastic keyboard” that would come in the same box for less than $500. “The idea was apparently abandoned, but that was probably Apple’s only real hope of ever making Chromebooks competitive in most schools,” Gurman added.

It’s unclear if the scrapped plastic “iPad” would have come as the 10th-gen “iPad” announced last week, or as another standalone “iPad” model. The new 10th generation “iPad” joins the “iPad” range as the latest entry-level “iPad” with the A14 Bionic chip, iPadOS and an all-screen design. However, the new “iPad” doesn’t support the latest Apple Pencil and doesn’t have a laminated screen.

At $449, the new “iPad” is more expensive than the entry-level ninth-gen iPad, which remains in the range for $329, but is cheaper than the iPad Air, which starts at $599. The new “iPad” will begin arriving at customers this week, along with the M2 iPad Pro, starting Wednesday, October 26th.
