Warning: Contains the following full spoilers for Episode 6 of House Of The Dragon, which aired September 25, 2022 on HBO. To refresh your memory, check out our review of Episode from last week.
It’s only halfway through the first season and our two leads have finally turned up for work. Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke are now taking on the roles of Rhaenyra and Alicent respectively, and it’s a testament to the strong work of Milly Alcock and Emily Carey that it takes a part of this episode to adjust to the change. Helpfully, the ten-year time jump signaled by the casting change has seen only a continuation of already established patterns: the pair has settled into their rivalry and established a routine of small tournaments that warps the entire court.
We start with a woman moaning, and for once I’m not complaining again about the show’s obsession with women as dynastic instruments. Well, that too. D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra gives birth to their third son, a baby whom husband Laenor (John Macmillan) is naming Joffrey after his long-lost love. No sooner is the umbilical cord cut than the queen demands to see the baby: Rhaenyra, stubborn to the bone, insists on carrying the baby herself as a form of passive resistance. When her plan is to embarrass Alicent, she fails: while Alicent’s eyes show a moment of genuine concern, it’s quickly replaced by the usual sniping.
