Warning: Contains the following full spoilers for Episode 9 of House Of The Dragon, which aired October 16, 2022 on HBO. To refresh your memory, check out ours Recap of last week’s episode.

The king is dead! Long live the… um, who’s next? That’s the question hanging heavy over this penultimate episode of the season, as the death of Viserys the Peaceful marks the end of an era in more ways than one. The departure of Paddy Considine’s well-meaning king after last week’s sad last hooray around the family table means the troubled Cold War between his potential heirs is likely to heat up very quickly.

We begin with an impressive series of images of the Red Keep in darkness and mist, the empty Iron Throne and its silent throne room. After Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and her father Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) shed a silent tear for the dead man, keeping Viserys’ death from spreading until they have had a chance to secure the throne is number one priority Alicent’s eldest son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney). That means imprisoning the servants and all nobles who do not bend the knee; it even means locking Rhaenys (Eve Best) in her rooms until she swears allegiance.
