It’s a break from the habit Game Of Thrones had of having a big fight in the penultimate episode.
“
Stealing the throne won’t be easy. On the one hand, the Small Council is initially divided on the issue. Lord Beesbury (Bill Paterson) rightly points out that what they are doing is illegal. Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) clearly planned the whole affair with Otto and Lord Jasper Wylde (Paul Kennedy) in advance, much to Alicent’s dismay. Grand Maester Orwyle (Kurt Egyiawan) is not averse to the plot. But Cole reacts violently to Beesbury’s objections to the coup, unfortunately for Beesbury, and kills him in a manner that may be manslaughter, may be murder (in George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood it is clear murder). The show finally remembers the existence of Graham McTavish’s Ser Harrold Westerling, captain of the Kingsguard, and he finally gets something to do, orders Cole to come down and then walks out of the meeting. He’s pretty much the only person Otto and Co. don’t stop at immediately.
The key is to crown Aegon as soon as possible. Viserys’ alleged desires are a possible source of legitimacy, but hearing them alone will not convince everyone. The coronation ceremony will further put the matter in the clear: the only problem is that Aegon is AWOL somewhere in Flea Bottom. Alicent sends Cristen Cole and the more sinister Lucius Malfoy – sorry, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) – in search of their wandering eldest; Otto sends Ser Arryk Cargyll (Luketitsor) and his brother Ser Erryk Cargyll (Elliotttitsor) on the same mission. The Twin Knights privately discuss whether it is advisable to put the outrageous creep Aegon on the throne: Arryk is for it; Erryk less so – especially when he visits the Children’s Battle Pit, which is one of Aegon’s favorite spots. Yes, a pit. where children fight While nuclear buggers like Aegon look on and sometimes father illegitimate children. I can’t be the only one who thinks someone has to burn this place down – and in fact, Otto’s men do it a little later.
That’s because the White Worm Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), who already knows of the king’s death (note that Alicent’s lady-in-waiting lights a lamp in her window beforehand), offers to help find Aegon in exchange for a promise that Otto will stop the child fighting abuse. Otto and Mysaria’s alliance seems to spell trouble for literally all their enemies in the future. But there is a battle over Aegon’s custody when the Seekers reach him. Aegon wants to run to the hills and there is open battle before the misguided heir is brought back to face his own coronation. Alicent tries to play off her custody of him to make Cole captain of the Kingsguard and protect Rhaenyra’s life; Otto keeps his own advice.
Aegon is a little happier with the crown on his head, the gold cloaks around him, and the cheers of his new subjects, but he can’t enjoy his freedom for long. Ser Erryk decides to break away from the green faction and free Rhaenys on his way, but they are separated in the crowd being herded into the Dragonpit for the coronation. She decides to go with the flow and try to escape on the dragon’s back.
The climax of the coronation ceremony is therefore marked by the explosive arrival of her steed, Meleys, the Red Queen, beneath the great floor of the dragon pit. Their escape kills many innocent civilians and none of the royal family, although for one glorious moment it looks like Rhaenys, who should have been more like the queen than the never was, might end the whole strife . Alicent is terrified but faces her down, protecting her son’s body with her own, and in a moment when the deer recognizes the deer, or at least the mother recognizes the mother, Rhaenys decides not to burn all of them and just flies away – not to mention the carnage she’s left behind. Hope this doesn’t come back to bite someone, metaphorically; Meleys appears to be literally biting someone.
It’s a departure from the habit Game Of Thrones had in later seasons of having a big fight in the penultimate episode, though maybe a rampage by a dragon is close enough. Next week, Rhaenyra will presumably learn of her father’s death and her half-brother’s coronation, and the dragon shit will really hit the fans. The civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons is upon us and no one will be safe.
