Apple will announce new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models in “within a few days,” respected Bloomberg said journalist Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter today.
Codenamed J617 and J620, the new 11-inch and 12.9-inch models will be the first update to the high-end iPad since April 2021, with both models sporting the M1 chip and a new 12,- 9 inch mini LED received display. For their first update in a year and a half, upcoming “iPad Pro” models are expected to receive Apple’s M2 silicon chip, which will offer faster performance and potentially new charging capabilities.
In terms of design, the new iPads will look like the current models, with no major changes expected. Early rumors said the smaller 11-inch model would get a mini-LED display, which is currently only available on the larger 12.9-inch model, but that’s no longer expected.
The new iPad Pro models could also feature some form of MagSafe charging capabilities, according to previous reports. There is also a chance that the new iPad Pro models will have reverse wireless charging capabilities, allowing users to charge their iPhone or AirPods on the back of the iPad.
In view of the expected incremental updates for the upcoming iPads, Apple is no longer planning an event for October. Apple is expected to roll out the new iPads and updates to the Mac range through press releases and updates on its website.
In addition to the new “iPad Pro” models, Apple is expected to release iPadOS 16 later this month. Unlike previous years, this year’s iPadOS and iOS updates were not released at the same time. Instead, Apple delayed “iPadOS 16” until later in the fall to allow more time to refine the update and work on the Stage Manager. “Stage Manager” is a new multitasking and windowing system for certain “iPad” models, which continues to face bugs despite the release of “iPadOS 16” in just a few weeks.
