before JJ Perryhis directorial debut day shiftthe producer of the film – and John Wick Director-Chad Stahelski chatted with Collider’s own Steve Weintraub about his past and future projects. From the work on the 2008 cult classic speed racers with The Wachowskis to almost decades of success Keanu Reeves-Action franchise starring John Wick, Stahelski gave a lot of insight into these projects. A question he was asked was about him John Wick 5the continuation of the coming John Wick 4 slated for release on March 24, 2023, and whether the film still has a future, Stahelski not only answered the question but also gave an insight into the director’s mindset around the success of the acclaimed action franchise.
Weintraub asked Stahelski if he would do that John Wick 5, which was given the green light back in August 2020, was still on the table. The director responded by laying that decision at the feet of the studio, who are the ultimate decision maker as to whether they will proceed with this film. He also provided context for why he doesn’t really know when the franchise will end, saying the first film was an unexpected success. It was just a fun action film that he and the team wanted to make, so the fact that the series has been so successful seems crazy to him.
[As of right] Now it belongs to the studio [full] intention to continue the franchise. And look, I’m not going to say we’ve seen all the directors and producers where they’re going, “Yeah. I do not know. I think I’ll make five,” or it’s like, “Oh, yeah, yeah. ” And I’m just like, ‘Look, man.John Wick 1′ was a jerk. We turned it into a fun little action film that we’d love to see.” And the fact that it’s life-changing now nine years later. He changed my life. He changed Keanu’s life. He changed the lives of many other people and people still want to see more.
Stahelski talks about how “damn flattering” it is to not only see the franchise’s continued success, but also that people keep wanting to see more of the franchise. “I’m the happiest guy out there. The fact that the fans keep wanting to see more, the fact that we keep wanting to do more, is a testament to that.” But he and Reeves would like to do something new John Wick movies, they’re also happy to be retiring from the franchise and pursuing other projects, mentioning Reeves’ upcoming role in the Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio-produced adaptation of the 2003 novel written by Eric Larsen, Devil in the White City. Stahelski himself has a number of other projects in the pipeline in addition to the upcoming ones John Wick 4including the Henry Cavill-with remake of the 1986 film highlandersa film adaptation of the 2012 Kaiju novel Project Nemesis written by Jeremy Robinsonand a 2020 video game film adaptation Spirit of Tsushima.
While the director-star couple is happy to pursue other projects, Stahelski makes it clear that the duo will likely sit down and start crumbling the story John Wick 5 as always: on a press tour.
I have no doubt that in a year or so we’ll start jonesing, “Yeah, it’s time a ‘Wick’.” And we do that every time, literally every time wick was written, or at least conceived, in Japan at the Imperial Hotel with me and Keanu on our press tour. It starts with a few glasses of Yamazaki or Hibiki and next we say, “I didn’t know we could do that.” And so we start writing them.
Another tradition in writing these films is to claim that it will be the last, even though, as Stahelski puts it, after a few glasses of Japanese whiskey, they are already discussing the next film. “So we’re totally flattered. It’s a real honor that people even ask us to do that, so I think it’s in the cards. We’d like to keep going until we all fall down or can’t walk or direct anymore.”
Stahelski concludes with the statement about the future of the John Wick The franchise is open-ended, although he and Reeves would love to make these films for the rest of their careers, although there’s no set timeline for it John Wick 5, it is done when they feel they have a story to tell. “When? I dont know. Maybe right after. If we had an idea, Steve, that we just go, that has to be done now, we would do it. So, up to this point, I’m absolutely open- ended option. We’d love to work with him again, if again, I know I always say it. If I were to spend the rest of my career working with Keanu, it would be a blessed career.
John Wick 4 hits theaters on March 24, 2023. You will find more information in our exclusive interview with Stahelski shortly.
