Current generation high-end PCs and consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consume a lot of electricity. While it may not sound like much, in the long run this energy consumption can bring us to the brink of crisis ecological disaster. That is, if nothing is done to make the gaming industry more environmentally friendly.
A PlayStation 4 is rated with 165W at maximum capacity, while a PlayStation 5 is also rated 350W. That’s an increase in power consumption of more than 100%. If this continues, next-gen consoles will demand even more power in the future.
Let me tell you what’s at stake here. Even if you don’t care that much about the environment, government agencies can ban Consoles and GPUs when they don’t meet efficiency standards. Why? Because the health of the planet comes first and gaming isn’t the only form of entertainment out there.
People can live without games, but they won’t be able to live without the planet. We are already seeing drastic climatic changes and global warmingwhich makes the official bodies even more active in matters of energy efficiency.
Recently we saw that European Union could ban 8K and 4K TVs that don’t meet energy efficiency standards. And I honestly appreciate the initiative. If anything, this is waking up the gaming industry to the fact that the power consumption problem is real and spiraling out of control.
If the developers and manufacturers don’t decide to make their products more environmentally friendly, we can all wait and see how long it will be before the authorities ban the gaming industry.
Take the new RTX4090, for example. The card is undoubtedly powerful and massive in size, so it obviously takes a lot of power. When pairing Nvidia’s RTX 4090 with a powerful CPU like the AMD ThreadRipper, you may need a power supply that can offer up to 1300W.
Now imagine what the power requirements of an even more powerful GPU could be if it ever comes out in the near future.
The Covid 19 and mining craze a few years ago created some obstacles in the gambling industry. People couldn’t get their favorite GPUs because they were either out of stock or sold at a bargain price ridiculous price.
As a result of this and that PlayStation 4 port, the games that have been released in recent years have had fairly low requirements. Some people were also not actively trying to buy the RTX 20 or 30 series Availability.
But now that these issues have subsided, the game requirements for the latest versions are getting high again. Game developers also insist on getting rid of the Xbox Series S port for upcoming games.
The lack of an Xbox Series S port allows developers to develop their games according to the Current generation powerhouse consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. A high-end PC equipped with RTX 20 and 30 series will still be in business. But how long?
Eventually, people will need to buy more powerful GPUs and consoles. That is, if they want to enjoy the latest games that may harm the environment. The gaming industry as a whole could be in jeopardy if things continue like this.
The point is that it’s not just manufacturers who need to make more environmentally friendly consoles or GPUs. It is also the task of game developer to meet these requirements and optimize their games accordingly.
We’re going to have to downsize the hardware at one point or another. And also make the games more optimized to keep the gaming industry going. However, there are no signs that this will happen any time soon. Unless some government or other official body calls out the gaming industry for their absurd power consumption.
In addition to the developers and manufacturers, we as a consumer, also play a role in making the gaming industry greener. We must raise our voices wherever we can and embrace the changes that come with hardware capabilities being scaled down to make devices more powerful environmentally friendly.
