With the updates for iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2, Apple is expanding the Weather app to include an Apple News area. The Apple News module resides under the 10-day forecast on iPhone and displays relevant regional news.

For example, in Raleigh, the app has a story about Atlantic hurricanes, and in San Diego, there’s a story about fire season. Content varies by location, and tapping a story displayed in the Weather app opens the Apple News app.

Not all cities show news at all times and it seems that if there is a weather alert at the top of the app, e.g. B. in the case of rain or severe weather warnings, the message module is also removed. It’s not clear if weather-related alerts will be limited to select cities or only appear when relevant information is available. As of now, the feature appears to be live only in the United States.

Apple seems to have rolled out the new weather app module server-side, but it’s only showing up on devices running iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2, suggesting it’s supposed to be a new feature added with the beta updates .
