Warner Bros. has been attempting to create a DC Cinematic Universe for over a decade, particularly since Disney had great success with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This grand plan started with man of Steel but began to fall apart after Zack Snyder departed in 2017 justice league and say goodbye to him Lord of the rings-inspired plan for an epic DC saga.
In the five years since justice league incident, DC tried to get things going again but never really found the cohesion of a cinematic universe. Progress has been hampered in part by the absence of Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman, who were supposed to be the faces of this universe and yet haven’t appeared in five years.
With the Warner Bros. Discovery merger now complete, many are excited to see how new management plans to handle DC. After the cancellation of there were some worrying signs bat girlbut new comments have revealed a bigger plan for the future.
DC makes MCU-inspired plans for the future
During the Warner Bros. Discovery Q2 earnings call, CEO David Zaslav made the announcement “DC is at the top of the list” of his plans while trying to mirror Marvel Studios’ methods.
DC’s top heroes are meant to be viewed as a “big chance” for the future of the company. In addition, Zaslav confirmed that they will build “a team with a 10-year plan focused only on DC,” similar to what Disney did with Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige:
“If we look at the opportunities that we have broadly, DC is at the top of the list for us. You look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman, these are brands that are known all over the world and are able to inspire people all over the world with great stories is a great opportunity for us. We did a reset. We have restructured the business, which is what we will focus on. There will be a team with a ten-year plan focused only on DC. It’s very similar to the structure that Alan Horn and Bob Iger put together very effectively with Kevin Feige at Disney.
Zaslav also shared his goals “Go for quality” to ensure projects are only released when they are fully complete:
“We believe we can build a long-term, much stronger and sustainable growth business out of DC. And as part of that, we’re going to focus on quality and not release a film until it’s done. We’re not going to put out a movie to do a quarter, the focus will be, ‘How do we make these movies the best way we can in general?’ But DC is something we think we could improve on and that’s what we’re focusing on now.”
What is the future of DC Movies?
Warner Bros. Discovery’s new management seems poised to completely reinvigorate the studio’s approach to DC. The studio seems aware of the potential the DC brand will have in the years to come to compete with Marvel by finally using their greatest heroes properly.
That goal of forming a creative team to plan DC’s next decade will likely come with the appointment of a Kevin Feige-esque leader to oversee everything. Zaslav’s search for this leader will no doubt be thorough as he is looking for someone worthy of entrusting Warner Bros.’s greatest brand.
Clearly aware that the previous approach has been a mess, this new management believes the biggest faces like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman deserve more attention. The promise of having performed a “reset” is certainly interesting, as it’s unclear at this time whether this is just related to the behind-the-scenes structure or also hints at a DCEU reboot.
Not only that, the comments about the focus on quality should reassure those who worry it will lead to attempts to ramp up production too quickly on too many projects. Perhaps Warner Bros. is willing to play the long game to gradually build a universe on par with the MCU.
WB could try to stick with the current universe, completely reboot the franchise, or possibly Matt Reeves’ The Batman World; In each scenario, major changes are imminent. Perhaps Comic-Con 2023 will finally be DC’s big break, being able to offer a blockbuster presentation in Hall H that outlines a vision for the future afterward The Lightning.
DC’s next release will be Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam which hits theaters on October 21.
