After introducing iPads with LCD and miniLED display technologies in the last decade, Apple is said to be preparing an OLED iPad. While other competitors are already offering tablets with an OLED display, here’s why Apple is taking so long, why it’s planning it now, and which models will get the perfect blacks of this technology.
Why is Apple preparing an OLED iPad now?
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the first OLED iPad would launch in 2022, but later said that plan had been scrapped. In a later report, the analyst said that Apple still expects to launch an OLED iPad at some point in the near future.
DSCC’s Ross Young recently spoke about why Apple decided to make an OLED iPad after all these years – and the answer is pretty simple. The costs go down. Young believes that not only will OLED panel performance improve over the next few years thanks to tandem stacks and phosphorescent blue emitters, larger fabs will also lower costs.
When can we expect the launch of an OLED iPad?
According to DSCC Ross Young, Apple will focus on this type of iPad from 2024 onwards. A report from last year stated: the electr said Apple is slowly transitioning through four types of display technologies for its products.
It started with traditional-backlit IPS LCD, miniLED-backlit IPS LCD, which is now coming to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, and closer Future OLED.
The report assumes that the first OLED iPad – and even the OLED MacBook – is likely to appear in the period 2023-2026. These days, 2024 seems to be the sweet spot for the iPad and 2026 for the Macs.
After this transition, Apple will finally switch to microLED:
Despite the similarity in name to miniLED, it is a completely different technology. It’s effectively a much more sophisticated version of OLED. It’s brighter, more energy efficient and doesn’t suffer from burn-in. Apple’s interest in microLED dates back to at least 2014, and while there are some signs of progress, the technology is still in the very early stages of development. As with OLED, it will likely come to the Apple Watch first, then iPhone, iPad and Macs, in that order.
Which iPads will come with an OLED display?
When analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first said Apple was preparing an OLED iPad, he expected the company to bring this technology to the iPad Air and then to the base-model iPad and iPad mini, as it incorporated miniLED technology the iPad Pro would focus.
But since DSCC Ross Young noted that this technology will advance quite a bit over the next few years – and get cheaper too – it makes sense that Apple could be preparing a new generation of iPad Pro with an OLED display, to be followed by the other iPads.
For the iPhone, for example, Apple is said to offer different types of OLED panels for the 14 series. the electr reports.
Samsung Display will apply different grades of material to the OLED panels it will make for the upcoming iPhone 14 series, depending on the model tier, TheElec has learned.
It will use its latest and most advanced material set for the higher-tier iPhone 14 models, while using its previous-gen set for the lower-tier ones, sources said. The step was taken to save costs, it said […]
With that in mind, it would make sense for the company to follow the same trend with its entire line of iPads.
Wrap up
We’re at least a few years away from seeing Apple unveil an OLED iPad. Although the time hasn’t come yet, the company is expected to unveil another iPad Pro with miniLED technology.
