Kody Brown admitted in the Sunday series of sister wives that he is not close to some of his children; However, in typical Kody fashion, he took little responsibility for the strained relationships.
Instead, Kody’s father-of-18 seemed to put a lot of the blame on his former wife Christine Brownfrom whom he separated in November 2021.
Fans have watched the aftermath of Kody and Christine’s split play out in the current season of the TLC series, with the most recent episode talking about how the former couple’s children — namely Truely and Ysabel–- will handle the big changes that are coming our way.
As viewers saw in Sunday’s episode, Christine and Kody didn’t get a chance to sit down with their youngest daughter to break the news together because Truely overheard Christine discussing her upcoming move to Utah. After Christine Truely (off-camera) explained that the two were leaving Flagstaff, Ariz. and that she and Kody were “already divorced,” Kody accused his ex of negatively influencing her daughter’s opinion of the way.
“So it’s almost like this just follows a narrative,” Kody claimed. “She continues Truely with, ‘Well, dad’s never here anyway, right?’ I mean, she leads Truely down the street.”
Kody further blamed Christine, explaining that when his relationships with his younger children are bad, “it’s not always my fault.”
“…It’s like I didn’t have a mother [of the children] who was willing to actually help that,” he claimed. “And Christine here, who needs excuses to leave, I think has been preparing things for a very long time to justify this to her children.”
In response to Kody’s attacks, Christine argued that if she and Truely stayed in Flagstaff, they would more alone and Truely “would be lonely” while Truely would have her older sisters in Utah aspyn and Mykelti and her nearby families to “wrap her when she’s around.”
“…that’s what I want to give her for the rest of her life, which is to be surrounded by love and just enveloped,” Christine said.
Christine and Kody’s other daughter, Ysabel – who is subsequently preparing to move to North Carolina to attend college – said that she and Kody aren’t very close, so she would miss her mother more than her father.
“I will miss my mother more than I will miss [my dad], I think — because I don’t think we’re really close,” admitted Ysabel. “But I mean, he’s still my father.”
During the episode, Kody argued that his time spent with Ysabel was mostly that he was “doing a lot of work to get her out of himself.”
“I don’t know what it is,” Kody continued. “I don’t think I’m that big of an ogre. I don’t know why she isn’t talking to me. I’m open to them.”
Fans of the show may recall that Kody chose not to travel when then-17-year-old Ysabel underwent scoliosis surgery in 2021, citing COVID-19 concerns. On Sunday’s episode, Kody revealed that he had once again decided not to travel for the sake of his daughter, this time opting not to help the high school grad move to North Carolina. While Ysabel Kody said it was okay that he couldn’t make it, Kody said he suspected his daughter was still upset about his choice.
“I think Ysabel is probably hurt that I didn’t go, but there are people who rely on me more than just Ysabel,” he said. “And it just wouldn’t work in this case.”
For those keeping track of home, Kody has had serious conflicts with at least four of his adult children: Ysabel as well paedon (who is his only son with Christine); and gift and garrisonwho are some of his sons with second wife Janelle. Many of Kody’s other adult children, including Mykelti, Aspyn, logan, Hunter and leonall live out of state and have not spoken publicly about their relationships with Kody.
