NBA 2K23 is a massive game to play every day, with lots of different content to keep you busy until the iteration releases next year. It can seem quite overwhelming for a newbie as it is difficult to know right off the bat where to invest your time and energy.
Here are some of the most popular game modes, broken down so you know which are competitive or casual, online or offline, easy to learn or require a large investment of your time, and which you can play solo or require you have a squad.
Often considered the greatest player in basketball history, Michael Jordan famously wore the number 23. For 2K23, they honored his legacy by giving us 15 of Jordan’s greatest moments to relive in-game. 2K has made sure each of these challenges is as realistic as possible with pinpointed graphics and modified gameplay to ensure you really experience what basketball was like during its reign. There is no penalty for changing the game’s difficulty, so your ability to earn rewards will not be affected by your skill level. There are 6 rewards for completing all challenges. The MyCareer rewards are a UNC Jordan jersey, Jordan calf sleeves and a gold Jumpman chain. While MyTeam Rewards include a Jordan Coach Card, a 99 OVR Free Agent Jordan Card and a ’95-’97 Bulls Alternate Jersey.
This offline story mode is single player and gives you the experience of an NBA career. You can customize your character to look like you by either carefully adjusting their face, hair and body using the in-game tools or by performing a face scan using the MyNBA2K23 app on your phone.
No matter how well you dominate your rookie season in the NBA, top sports analysts Kendrick Perkins and JJ Reddick will constantly remind anyone who will listen that your franchise made a huge mistake in picking ahead of Shep Owens to have. This adds a whole new hater aspect to the MyCareer experience, making it quite comedic.
Other new features of MyCareer include a high fashion and music rating to improve your marketability. This is important for making VC through endorsements and earning perks that will help you level up your build. For the players who like story modes in basketball, this has a lot more to offer than previous 2K titles.
Also known as the city. This game mode is single player and lets you play online as the character you created in your MyCareer. You play casual streetball up to 21, either 2v2 or 3v3, with friends or strangers, and everyone does a bit of VC after the game to improve their character. Team grade and win bonuses determine how much VC you win in park games. You can totally screw up the game and still potentially get 100 VC, while if performed well you could get over 400. There is not much at stake in this game mode. If you’re alone in the park, it’s better to go to the no-squad court lest you get kicked out by a team of two or three ready. If you don’t enjoy playing with the CPU, you can go straight to Park once you’ve created your player in MyCareer.
ProAm is much more competitive than Park and requires you to have a squad to compete. You play in either 3v3 or 5v5 and the game pairs you with another team so you don’t have to wait for worthy opponents to try to take you on. Your reputation is at stake when you play ProAM as losing or abandoned games will negatively affect your ranking. High ranked players can make a name for themselves in NBA 2K and garner a following, inspiring some to create content or be noticed by the 2K League as 5v5 ProAm is the game mode most similar to the 2K League structure .
Rather than wagering your reputation like in ProAm, AnteUp is all about wagering your in-game currency, known as VC. AnteUp is played 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3, allowing players to enter this game mode with or without a squad. This game mode is essentially Park but with the addition of 1v1 and real VC on the line. The courts have different VC bets above so you know how much you will lose or win before you start a game. If you know you’re good and want to build up your in-game currency faster, AnteUp is the place to do it. This mode is pivotal, so you’ll need to be fairly confident in your squad’s abilities. It won’t be easy to take VC from these people.
This two-player couch co-op game mode offers a lot of freedom and customization. While playing against your friend, you can play as 1 to 5 NBA players at the same time. This game mode is very fast paced, similar to Park, with no time outs or substitutions. You can also decide how long the game lasts, from as fast as first to 5 points and as long as first to 50, it’s really up to you. You have complete control over the players you want on your team as long as they are on an in-game list. So if you can’t decide between the Lakers, Heat, or Cavs version of LeBron James, just form a team with all three. This game mode is quick and easy to pick up at any time, as long as the person you are playing with can play on the same console as you.
This is the ultimate single player fantasy game mode for NBA 2K23. Players are acquired through cards you collect by either grinding for them, bidding on them on the auction house, or getting lucky opening packs. Once you’ve assembled a reasonably decent team, you can play 3v3 or 5v5 offline against the AI, or online against another player to gain MT, XP, and rewards, which will help you grow your card collection and stay competitive.
The interesting thing about this game mode is that it starts out quite realistic at the game’s release date, but with new content and different versions of players appearing every Friday, the game pushes further and further into the realm of pure fantasy. Glitch cards will be released, allowing players to do things they could never do in real life, like a Steve Nash diving like Vince Carter, or a Ben Simmons shooting a three-pointer like Stephen Curry. With every update, you never know if the best players will need to be bought, lucked out or ground up, so you’ll need to keep up with MyTeam either through the website 2KDB.net or a content creator like Canada’s own HTB so you don’t fall behind .
If MyTeam seems too time-consuming for you and you want your players’ strengths and weaknesses to be reflected in a true-to-life way, you should give this game mode a try. PlayNow Online is a great way to play online 5v5 competitions against another player without having to grind for your team. Teams are pre-made, so just pick your favorite NBA team and start competing against a friend or stranger right away. If you choose to play online with Randos, depending on the team you select, 2K will pair you with another player using a team of a similar skill level, so (hopefully) it won’t be a blowout. If you choose the current Raptors roster, you won’t be going up against someone who picked the 2017 Warriors.
This game mode is in the WNBA section that you see on the home screen. This is the female MyCareer where you can live out your WNBA fantasy similar to the long-running male version. Here you create one of ten builds for your preferred height, weight, and wingspan and select a team to be drafted to. The Las Vegas Aces won the previous championship, so this could be a good starting point for your player. To ensure your success, you must dominate on and off the pitch through skill and popularity. Building fans for yourself and the WNBA. If you want to take your W player out of CPU gameplay, there’s also a park where you can play against other people, whether they’re friends or random players.
This game mode is intended for those who do not necessarily have NBA 2K gaming experience but have a keen interest in basketball. Basically, you play the role of an NBA GM and do everything in your power to secure a championship win for your chosen franchise. The cool thing about this game mode is that you can simulate or play the games for your team. So unless your team is very strong, it’s best to simulate for a few years and build your roster before jumping onto the pitch and controlling the players yourself. A player’s loyalty score is pretty much irrelevant in any game mode except MyGM. If you choose the Toronto Raptors as your franchise, it becomes a lot harder to recruit someone like Klay Thompson, who has a high loyalty score, as opposed to someone like Kevin Durant, who has a much, much lower loyalty score.
