10 Movies Like John Wick You Should Watch If You Love Action - IGN
Written by adrina

Johnny Utah, Ted, Neo and so many other Keanu roles led to one of our favorite Keanu Reeves franchises of all time: John Wick. Why is this movie so great? Is it the fast-paced, well-choreographed action sequences? Is it the creative camera work and set design that draws our attention? Did Reeves perform most if not all of the stunts in the films? Whatever it is, these are just some of the reasons we love the John Wick movies in all their glory.

While the first three movies are always watchable, it’s good to have similar options with new stories to explore while we wait for John Wick: Chapter 4. To try a new shade of Wick, check out this list of the best movies like John Wick.

The Heist 2 (2014)

In what some people call “the greatest action movie of all time”, The raid 2 is the high-profile sequel that clearly surpassed its predecessor in terms of quality and budget. In from the same guys The night comes for us, the cast showcases their fighting and stunt skills that have certainly paved the way for these future projects. With that in mind, this film has been considered her best film to date. As John Wick, There are plenty of fight scenes and good supporting characters, but in the end there’s just one guy who single-handedly takes on a small army of attackers.

Nobody (2021)

The very New Age action-packed dark comedy that everyone is talking about is No one, a film that takes the old dude kick ass genre to the next level. As the youngest film on this list, it’s becoming clear that the studios are catching up on what audiences want: mindless violence mixed with black humor. While it’s not the first film to do so, they seem to have already perfected the formula, only enhanced by Bob Odenkirk’s great performance and line deliveries. What makes this film similar to John Wick is the sheer resilience of the protagonist, who is able to recover from injuries that would destroy everyone else.

Hardcore Henry (2015)

The extreme, excessive violence of hardcore henry is one of those things that audiences fell in love with instantly. No disclaimer needed, the Bond-esque intro is heavy enough to turn any unsure viewer away. Shot entirely from the first person perspective, this film is unique in that it somehow fails to give a face and literally a voice to the protagonist, but still lets you sympathize with him. Highlighted by the appearance of the Sharlto Copley clones, this film also has a great comedic confidence in how ridiculous it is. If you’re looking for over-the-top action, you’ve come to the right place hardcore henry becomes more and more ridiculous to its twisted end.

A rocking retro kickass film about international espionage and double agents, Atomic Blonde is a spectacle that cements Charlize Theron as the badass leading lady that she is. Set in Berlin, Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is a British spy who must navigate the chaotic city in the year the Wall fell. As you can imagine, it’s hard to know who to trust during the Cold War, leading to many twists and turns in the plot. The addition of James McAvoy as Theron’s counterpart really is a great choice as well, as showing the obvious on-screen chemistry does nothing but add to the vividness of this unique film.

The Night Comes for Us (2018)

Adapted from a graphic novel of the same name, The night comes for us is a magnificent story based on the horrific actions and events caused by the Triad: a Chinese crime syndicate ruling over a large number of countries around the world. The action is graphic yet entertaining with a mix of styles like kill Bill and John Wick combined to create a bloodier but slightly excessive sequence of events. What makes it unique is that this story feels darker and more hopeless from the start, creating more of an art house feel that sticks with you.

Recorded (2008)

As command, out of stock is about a daughter who gets stolen from the one guy you don’t want to steal. Like John Wick, Brian Mills (Liam Neeson) is a man of unwavering focus when it comes to achieving his goal: killing everyone responsible for his kidnapped daughter. Something similar about this film is the actor’s age at the time: Reeves was 49 years old John Wick and Neeson was 56 for out of stock. Though Neeson doesn’t perform his own stunts like Reeves does, the mere fact that he’s in a hardcore action film is a boon to fans around the world. This is truly one of the best Liam Neeson movies of all time.

Extraction (2020)

Another tale of a lone wolf taking on the world extraction features virtually non-stop action – after a brief introduction to the story – and some of the most intricate stunts in modern cinema. Considering the director, Sam Hargrave, was the stunt coordinator on films like Avengers: Endgame and another feature on our list Atomic Blonde, this film was always guaranteed to excel, at least in that department. The action scenes are just as relentless and hardcore as John Wick, and also use long takes where the actors perform most of the stunts. Also, as a bonus, Chris Hemsworth tossed around henchmen like rag dolls — especially if you love Chris Hemsworth movies.

The Villainy (2017)

A bit more story driven than John Wick, The villainy stands out on this list because there are some moments of creative fight cinematography that will forever raise your expectations of fight movies. The most similar things about this film are the fighting styles, the choreography (they shot the katana motorcycle fight scene two years ago John Wick Chapter 3 tat), and even some of the set designs are reminiscent of that. This is one of two films on this list with a female protagonist, and boy does Kim Ok-bin deliver an incredible performance.

Commando (1985)

A Schwarzenegger classic, Commando is another film on this list that shows us just how far a man can go when someone takes his daughter away from him. John Matrix (Schwarzenegger) might not be your favorite action protagonist, but you better believe that Arnold (as a retired Special Forces Colonel) really is a one-man army. As far as cheesy 80’s action movies go, this one’s at the top of the ranks of the dumb. With its excessive explosions and Freddie Mercury-style villain, there are some ridiculous moments that arguably make the adventure even more enjoyable.

The Man From Nothing (2010)

A genre-bending, ass-kicking and teary-eyed movie, The Man From Nowhere (aka This man) is a beautiful blend of elements that naturally balance each other. Despite some cheesy editing and score choices throughout the film, the storyline, performances, and action are all pretty impressive. The characters are funny and well-written, which sometimes adds an extra comedic dimension to the whole thing. It doesn’t contain quite as much action as John Wick But the revenge-based plot makes the wait slightly worth it. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%, it’s hard not to overlook the great qualities of this film.
