We’ll be following every twist and turn in the trade winds around Soto and the rest of the league right here. Keep checking back for updates as the madness unfolds.
Astros acquire Trey Mancini from Orioles in 3-team deal
Longtime Orioles first baseman and DH Trey Mancini is reportedly traveling to Houston in a three-team trade that will send outfielder Jose Siri to the Tampa Bay Rays. The right-handed slugging Mancini matches the Astros’ penchant for hitters who hit less than average yet still pack pop.
Mancini, hit by the Orioles in the 8th round of the 2013 MLB draft, is hitting .268/.347/.404 with 10 homers, 16 doubles and 35 walks. If anything, he might be batting even better than meets the eye; His performance numbers have taken a hit due to the new wall configuration at Camden Yards. That likely puts Houston out of the market for Josh Bell, the Switch-battling Nationals first baseman who should soon join a competitor’s lineup.
The Astros are always on the lookout for solid players like Mancini, but with the Orioles looking ahead of schedule as they rebuild (they’re just three games away from last wildcard spot with a 51-51 record), some thought the Orioles might have him hold on so they can make a serious playoff push this year.
Instead, it appears that the Orioles will be passed over by at least one player who will step into the open and acquire some young guns – Ray’s prospect Seth Johnson and Astro’s prospect Chayce McDermott. The Astros will also get Ray’s pitching prospect Jayden Murray, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Yankees trade for Frankie Montas from Oakland, assistant
The New York Yankees are dealing with Oakland A’s starting pitcher Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino. per Jack Curry from YES Network. Montas, 29, has a 3.18 ERA this season and was probably the best starter left on the board after the Seattle Mariners snapped Luis Castillo.
As of early 2021, Montas has had an outstanding 3.30 ERA over 291 2/3 innings. The continued success comes with greater emphasis on his awesome splitter, which plays out 96 mph of heat he can cast as a four or two seamer. In exchange, the Yankees will reportedly send back their top pitching prospect, left-hander Ken Waldichuk, along with pitching prospects JP Sears and Luis Medina, and second-base prospect Cooper Bowman. It’s a strong return that clearly compares to Luis Castillo’s trade. The Yankees have insisted they not trade shortstop prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza, and that move was made without those youngsters.
Montas was one of the few marquee pieces the A’s stuck with after a winter sell-off. He will remain under team control through 2023, giving the Yankees a #2 caliber starter to bolster an already strong rotation.
With his team at a 108-win pace, Yankees GM Brian Cashman is going aggressive. He already added the Cubs’ great pitching rookie Scott Effross on Monday.
Padres take on Brewers’ Josh Hader in surprise closer swap
The San Diego Padres add one of the game’s best closers, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The Padres send their own closer, Taylor Rogers, to the Milwaukee Brewers, along with a number of young players for Josh Hader, the dominant left-hander.
The Brewers, who can either bring Rogers closer or highlight their own dominant setup man Devin Williams, have reportedly been bugging off hassle deals since Williams came on the scene.
In the deal, they’re adding several other talented players, including Esteury Ruiz, a young outfield player who could make an immediate impact on their lineup, according to Passan’s report. The Brewers currently lead the NL Central by three games over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Juan Soto rumours: Could a generational talent be on the way?
Are you ready for the seismic move that would be a Juan Soto trade? The latest rumor has it that the Nationals have three suitors for Soto more likely than the others: the San Diego Padres, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres and Dodgers, NL West enemies, fought a bidding war a year ago over another Nationals superstar – Max Scherzer. The Dodgers eventually came out with a surprise blockbuster that secured both Scherzer and shortstop Trea Turner.

Shohei Ohtani is likely to stay
The Shohei Ohtani situation has never been as urgent as the Soto talks, but the Los Angeles Angels have at least assessed the market as they head for another losing season despite the employment of Mike Trout and Ohtani. However, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported Monday afternoon that Ohtani will see through this season.
The two-way sensation, who is fighting for his first Cy Young and second straight AL MVP nod, may become a free agent after 2023 and has expressed a desire to play for a winning team. While the angels surround him with competing pieces, it might be appropriate to trade him in this winter.
