Spoilers ahead for the sixth season premiere of The good doctor on ABC, called “Afterparty” and Season 6 of Grey’s anatomy.
As expected after how the Season 5 finale The good doctor completed, shaun and LeahThe wedding reception of was disrupted for the worst shortly after the start of the sixth season premiere. Fans will remember that the spring finale ended with dr limit and Sister Villaneuva brutally stabbed to death by the abusive nurse’s ex while music blared in reception meaning none of the other doctors heard what had happened. It seemed like the main story at the start of season 6 was all about whether they would survive, but The good doctor went full instead Grey’s anatomy with a plot reminiscent of one of drama’s most iconic storylines. But is a reminder of yet another medical drama a good way to start Season 6?
Well, considering that The good doctor ended Season 5 with a scene I totally remembered NBC’s long-running medical drama HE and I’ve definitely come back for more Grays Similarities probably won’t hurt the other ABC series! Last season ended with owen stabbed Villaneuva off screen and then Lim as she stumbled onto the scene. I honestly thought this was more or less the end of the violent part of the story – with Owen as the stabber who would of course be captured while most of the next episode focused on trying to save Lim. How wrong was I!
So it was a surprise when Owen got his hands on a gun and turned the stab situation into an active shooter situation, and I, for one, was immediately reminded of that Grey’s anatomy Two-parter that ended Season 6 with a shooter making his way through what was then known as Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital. Even now, especially with Season 19 days until the premierethe shooter arc from Grey’s anatomy stands out as one of the scariest, most tragic and Game change of the series. If a hospital drama features a shooter and lockdown with main characters separated at key moments, compare to Grays are inevitable.
And I would say that The good doctor stands up to these comparisons quite well. The two shows are certainly not identical, although they both focus primarily on surgeons. Back in Season 6, Grays had a much larger ensemble than The good doctor does, meaning it could (and did) actually kill some notable characters to up the ante without actually taking out any of the highest-paid players. (REST IN PEACE Percy and reedthough.) Not even the shooter or Sister Villanueva — which I admittedly thought was an outlier in the season 5 finale, which you can re-stream with a Hulu subscription – died at “Afterparty”.
The death toll was significantly lower with the gunner engaged The good doctor compared to Grey’s anatomybut “Afterparty” ended in a way that guaranteed the effects would continue to be felt as if they were on Grays. Although Lim went through some extremely delicate moments during her surgeries, she woke up seemingly paralyzed from the waist down. That exact twist didn’t happen Graysbut even the doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West definitely didn’t shake off their traumatic situation.
So was The good doctor‘s “Afterparty” a copy of it Grey’s anatomy‘s shooter two-parter in 2009? Definitely not. This was an hour-long premiere that ended with everyone in the much smaller ensemble still alive Grays was a two-hour event with sky-high stakes once one of the doctors was killed. Still, the shooter and the hospital lockdown meant my thoughts hit the ground running Graysand that was a good thing The good doctor‘s premiere was solid enough for the most part that the comparisons don’t hurt. (I’m not sure what I think of Lea as a nurse, though.)
See what happens next The good doctor with new episodes on ABC Mondays at 10 p.m. ET in the 2022 TV premiere schedule. Shaun seems to have avoided any professional consequences for his breakdown in the OR because he ultimately saved the day, and the writing seems to be on the wall morgan and park as a couple. I hope so ashtray take a break one of these days!
