Days of Our Lives missed a lot as they teased the explosive stories they *won't* tell

It was mismatched couples week on days of our lives, but mostly it felt like we were just grouping a lot of B-plots together. The problem is that some of these stories are meant to be frontburners, but they just don’t feel like it.

Why did I feel like not much happened this week? Perhaps part of the problem is that the November sweeps are right around the corner and the show is on hold until then. Or maybe that’s it days of our lives dragged some of these stories out too long and we lost some of the brutality.

Take Eric and Nicole. They came full circle when she modeled for him, and that’s how they first fell in love a few decades ago. Passions are ignited, etc., etc. But instead of feeling like a steady buildup of forbidden love, their dance just felt drawn out and frustrating. When Eric first came back I was excited to see this piece but I’m not even really cheering for them anymore.

Nicole, divorce Rafe already. You’re just being cruel at this point. It’s not even about being torn between two men. Or if yes days doesn’t do a decent job of showing that. She wants Eric over Rafe. Period.

So close but so far

I really thought we were about to get an exciting turn when Gabi tracked down Rolf and extracted the truth from him with a scalpel to his throat. Ah, I thought. I didn’t see this coming, but now Gabi can play a game of cat and mouse with Li as they prepare for their wedding and then destroy him at the altar!

But then everything was literally obliterated with Rolf’s magical memory-killing serum, and the story’s dynamic drifted lazily back to near-nonexistent.

In a robe, Li stands behind Gabi with her hand on her shoulder. She expresses a wry look while wearing a black catsuit and cat ears

That’s Gabi’s wistful look as she realized this is as close to cat and mouse as we get.

More: Day of Days is back and personal!

This was truly true when Li attempted damage control with Dr. to run Rolf, who is no longer in Salem. “Why in God’s name did you have to erase her memory?” I don’t know Li, maybe the more important question is: Why in God’s name are you calling Rolf while Gabi is at your house? I’m sorry but she’s too smart to buy all of Li’s lame excuses over and over again when she comes across him when he’s planning sloppily. It doesn’t create tension, just anger.

And I know we should cheer for Brady/Chloe and Stefan/Gabi… but Stefan and Chloe are actually cute. And his comment on how he feels about her as more than just a power-hungry corporate machine was sweet. Still, the sparks between him and Gabi still fly, so maybe I’ll get more excited about her. Or they just drag it out like the other lukewarm relationships…

As for Brady, yes, Chloe, Kristen moving in before you’re done moving out is “so absurd” indeed. Everything about it is. I don’t know what to say except that Brady isn’t the smartest. Obviously he needs help. Gabi could have been a really fun ally in taking Kristen down if she kept her memories… but no, that story opportunity was lost too.

Why shouldn’t he tell his loved ones what’s really going on? Is he worried they can’t keep a secret? His father is a former spy and his stepmother is a master of the human mind – You can help.

Too little too late?

Are we getting a bit of an Alex/Stephanie reset? Well, maybe not so much a reset as an evolution to where they are should have started. Her break-in to find Alex handcuffed to Sloane’s bedside was a ridiculous farce…but it’s one I could get over. I was actually a bit dismayed to find myself on Team Alex in this case. Stephanie was terribly judgmental and demanded to know what Alex was doing there while she broke in and entered. She was a distraction, admittedly, but it’s still none of her business.

See? Alex is shocked, I agree with him too.

But then they got to a verbal sparring and This that’s how I really wish they had started their relationship. Starting out in a place of mutual dislike is a time-honored romantic trope, and the sparks that fly between insults can be downright electric. Alex could have been the high-spirited playboy that Stephanie shot down, which caused the two to clash as they work together.

but days of our lives started at a place of annoyance and discomfort, and it’s harder to move from there to the next phase. At least for me. But now Stephanie needs Alex’s help with Sloane, so let’s hope the show can pull off the relationship setup they’re pushing ahead one way or another.

twin talk

With so much focus on Stephanie’s attempts to get the dirt off Sloane, the whole devastating Chanel mystery felt like it was missing one important element: Chanel! Actually, it’s been like this all week, apart from not being able to tell Allie what’s going on and a few isolated awkward moments… like word of the threesome getting around family members of the participants.

And that excuse Allie made to Chanel for getting back together with Alex? “The sooner we hang out again, the less awkward it’ll be?” You haven’t been hanging out before! It’s not like he’s your bestie. You’ve only crossed paths a few times and had a drink together once.

More: The reunion we never saw coming

On the plus side, as bizarre as her stint with Chanel and Allie is, I’m growing more fond of Wendy. She was wonderfully incredulous when Johnny declared all the twins with separated fathers/ex-wife with sister/marriage ruined by the devil/in Tripp’s mother thing. Because everything is totally crazy. But then she also understood Johnny’s pain… and kindly put him in his place with Allie and Chanel. He needs more of that in his frying moments.

Right now, we’re seeing these two together more often as they take on their respective family members, but the duo have talked enough about Tripp this week to make it clear that they’re headed straight for a triangle. Even though I still feel like they screwed up by removing Joey from the equation.

Stray thoughts

• Ava’s plot against EJ should be a bright spot… but we had a few words to say about that elsewhere.

• Do you know how we know that the Christmas season is about to begin? They dragged the children out. We have Rachel, Holly and even a new Ari.

• Forget what would have happened if Alex had to go to the bathroom while Sloan was gone. Didn’t see anyone Gerald’s game? What if something happened and she never came back?

• Stephanie’s constant reassurances to Paulina are ridiculous. “I just keep digging myself deeper.” Yes, you do. Promising what you can’t deliver is not only foolish, it’s unprofessional!

• I feel like John finding out what was going on with Brady was a small leap of logic, even if it was the right one. “Eureka! Not only is Kristen responsible for the serum, we’re going to need more of this later, which we didn’t know before!”
