The Toronto Film Festival ushered in the fall awards season on Sunday night with the first in-person presentation of its Tribute Awards in three years at the city’s historic Fairmount Royal York Hotel.
“Perhaps more than any other year, this festival is special for me, not because it’s the 47th edition of TIFF, not because we’re showing more than 200 films from all over the world, but because we’re welcoming the whole film world back to Toronto” , announced Cameron Bailey, Festival CEO, as he opened the evening.

This year’s award winners included the ensemble cast of Michael Grandage’s 1950s love triangle my copConsisting of Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee, Linus Roache, David Dawson and Rupert Everett, which received the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance.

“We all enjoyed making this film so much and we hope you enjoy it,” Styles said.
It remains to be seen if Styles will be a regular on the awards circuit this year my copbut another of the evening’s honorees, Brendan Fraser, appears already secured a place in the running for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The whale.
He came to the ceremony from TIFF’s The whale Demonstration, where it was received with the same enthusiasm as in Venice.

“That’s new for me. I’m usually the one who distributes these things. I’ve gotten pretty good at it. The trick is – hold left hand, shake right hand,” joked Fraser as he picked up the heavy trophy.
The whale Writers Samuel D. Hunter and Aronofsky were present to present the award. Fraser thanked both of them for believing in him for the role.
“Art is about taking a risk, and you should know that they took a risk with me,” Fraser said.
“The whale, it’s a redemption story about a guy named Charlie. He has gone through significant changes in his life and has forgotten who he is and who he loves and is running out of time to tell them that if he can at all, but he has a superpower, Charlie can see the good in others , if you can’t do it see it yourself.
“I truly believe we need a little bit more of that in this world because it’s audiences that bring cinema to life, so I have to thank you for keeping me in the job I love because.” it’s a nice job if you can get it.”
Also honored was British director Sam Mendes, who accepted his trophy from Olivia Colman, who made a surprise appearance.

“TIFF started my film career almost a quarter of a century ago,” Mendes said. “american beauty had his very first screening here and I will truly never forget how the audience took the film to their hearts, as a large live audience to a full house can. There is nothing better in the world. It all started there for me and it feels like yesterday.”
Another highlight was the presentation of the Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award to Michelle Yeoh, which was preceded by a stirring laudation by her Everything everywhere at once co-star Stephanie Hsu.

“Stephanie ‘frigging’ Hsu. Thank you for this incredible introduction. As I sat there I said if I get up I’ll kick her ass because she made me cry,” Yeoh joked.
“Every time they play a tribute reel of my work, I’m reminded of how long I’ve been doing this. The nicks, the bumps, the scrapes along the way, the bad knees, the back, the shoulder to name a few but despite all the challenges I’m enjoying every moment and I hope to continue doing so for many years to come.”
Other honorees of the evening included Icelandic musician and composer Hildur Gudnadóttir with the Artisan Award, Egyptian-British director Sally El Hosaini with the TIFF Emerging Talent Award and Canadian-American indigenous singer Buffy Sainte-Marie with the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media.
