SPOILERS ALERT: Don’t read any further if you haven’t seen Season 2 of The Masked Singer, which aired September 28 on Fox.
Comedian Jeff Dunham, singer Montell Jordan and *NSYNC star Chris Kirkpatrick were revealed on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” as the show’s second episode shared a rare triple unmasking.
The Hummingbird was revealed to be Kirkpatrick while Pi-Rat was Dunham and Jordan Panther. Kirkpatrick was a holdover from last week’s unmasking; After that, Dunham became the first of that week’s three performances to leave with the fewest votes.
Jordan was later revealed to be a panther after taking on Harp in a battle royale (in which they both took turns singing Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild”). Harp won for the second week in a row.
“Vegas Night” opened with guest judge Donny Osmond, who appeared in Season 1 and sang “The Greatest Show”. Then came the first unmasking of the evening: postponed from last week’s premiere, Hummingbird was finally revealed to be Kirkpatrick. Thicke thought it was Dion Sanders; McCarthy Wahlberg went with Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas; Jeong named Tom Brady. Kirkpatrick sang Gavin DeGraw for his number “I Don’t Want to Be” last week.
For Pi-Rat, Osmond got it right with Dunham; Ken Jeong thought it was Robert Smigel, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg chose Steve Carell and then Carrot Top. Nicole Scherzinger went with Terry Fator. Robin Thicke chose Dana Carvey.
As for Panther, no one really guessed Jordan. Robin Thicke chose Iman Shumpert. Ken Jeong thought it was Sam Richardson, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg chose Lamar Odom. Nicole Scherzinger dated Billy Porter. Osmond said Andre Drummond.
Montell Jordan as Panther, Jeff Dunham as Pi-Rat and Chris Kirkpatrick as Hummingbird join Eric Idle as Hedgehog and William Shatner as Knight to become the first celebrity to leave The Masked Singer in Season 8.
Multiple eliminations in one episode are the norm this time around as The Masked Singer takes on a new King or Queen of Masked Singer format. This season, there will be three or four costumed celebrities performing each week, but only one will win and compete against two or three others the following week.
This will remain so throughout the season; in the first week it was the harp that moved forward; the harp survived week 2. After each round, three finalists compete in the semi-finals.
The Masked Singer starts Season 8 with costumes like Bride, Avocado, Venus Flytrap, Sir Bugaboo, Scarecrow, Hedgehog, and Mummies. Themed episodes include Vegas Night, Comedy Roast, Hall of Fame, Muppets Night, Andrew Lloyd Webber Night, TV Themes, 90s Night, Thanksgiving, and Fright Night . ” This season’s guests include Donny Osmond, Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Muppets, Will Arnett, Leslie Jordan, Joel McHale, Tori Spelling, Jon Lovitz, Jodie Sweetin, Carrot Top, Blue Man Group, Lance Bass, Danielle Fishel, Sheila E .and Drew Carey.
Season 8 contestants “have a total of 32 Grammy nominations, 16 Emmy wins, 8 gold albums, 4 Golden Globe nominations, 42 books, 10 Teen Choice Awards, and 5 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”
Here were the participants and their performances on the second evening:
Harp (WEEK 2 WINNER)
song: “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston
a notice: Night night
A notice: “Worked together.” “Well, you know Nicole, I always love seeing our names together. We should do it again soon.”
Voiceover Pack: “It feels incredible to be crowned the first queen of season 8. But I’m up against two new singers tonight and I’ve got to crush that performance if I’m going to keep that crown on my head. I’ve been called competitive all my life. But I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It means you worked hard to be the best. And I’m bringing that energy to the stage tonight. And now quickly, because I am always on time, I will give you, my faithful subjects, a new clue.”
Panel guesses: Amber Riley, Ashanti, Yvette Nicole Braun
Previous song: “Perfect” by Pink
Previous panel guesses: Queen Latifah, Jordin Sparks, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson
Panthers (MONTELL JORDAN)
song: “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone
likes: cat sleep
a notice: Weekend Warrior
a notice: globe and “victory”. “Panther believes that winning is not just about winning, winning means the world to me.”
Voiceover Pack: “It’s lucky to be here on Vegas night because one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to always back yourself. Right from the jump I was up to my game, rubbing against Beyonce’s side. Until one day people thought I was dead. Even my own family. I had the rare opportunity to attend my own funeral and see how others would remember me. It made me realize that I had more of a legacy to leave. So I started again from one to show that I was a scholar, a son, a lover and a leader. Tonight I’m here to prove that nothing and nobody has the power to define me.”
Panel advises: Dwight Howard, Andre Drummond, Sam Richardson, Brian McKnight, Lamar Odom, Billy Porter
Pi-Rat (JEFF DUNHAM)
song: “Crocodile Rock” by Elton John
likes: plunder
a notice: Great at multitasking
Note question: The Pi-Rat Special: Carrot Top. “I think I have something special I want to share with the world and you’re getting a little taste of it tonight.”
Voiceover Pack: “Hi ho, Sin City Babies, it’s time to meet old Pi-Rat. You see, when I was 8 years old, I wasn’t very popular. But I had a unique way of meeting friends. I always laughed. So me and my crew set sail to make the impossible dream come true. And go where few have gone before: Hollywood, California. My family said I had talent. But everyone else thought I was a total fool. I proved them wrong, and now I’m the king of all Pi-Rats. It was a triumph. And although I’ve performed in Vegas for many nights, I’ve never been a leading man. But tonight, I’m the star of this show.”
Panel advises: Robert Smigel, Terry Fator, Jeff Dunham
